The card I bought first had a Via chipset and refused to work with a JVC GR-D820 miniDV camcorder. This one has a Texas Instruments chipset and is very much plug and play. It worked with Windows Vista (Home Premium, 32 bit) and took less than five minutes to install, automatically load the drivers and start downloading the camcorder to Premiere Elements (also works fine with Windows Movie Maker).
I'd had an ancient (maybe 10 years old) FireWire card that Ubuntu finally ceased to support with version 10.10. I'd been told that TI-based cards were the best, but it's pretty hard to find that information before you buy. This card turned out to be just what I needed. In it went, and now all my FireWire peripherals are working again.
