More and more we are coming to rely on the iPhone to have an app that controls things - whether the ability to set your Sky box whilst sitting on a train, or being able to check your bank balance at the same time as drinking a pint in the pub. So here's another little gizmo that has an app to control an electrical plug in your house, so that you can turn things on and off while you are out. It's a great idea, and works well...but (and isn't there always a but) it is frankly a ludicrous price for one plug, because, let's face it, you will want more than one. If these were less expensive, I'd have given it more stars...but yes, the first time you realise that you are standing outside the house turning something on and off using you iPhone will give you a bit of a thrill if you like your gadgets!

in the age of people trying to cut back on power consumption it makes sense.
when your going on holiday and you want to automate your lights to ward off burglars it makes sense.
the fact that you allegedly can do it from the other side of the world seems a bit overkill. its a nifty
gadget and you will find yourself going further down your street with your phone to control teh small lamp in your bedroom,
but then after that the fun has worn off and you feel...is that it

If this was like £20 then it makes sense, but over £40?
its for teh gadget inclined apple looney, who has to buy everything they make, for teh rest of us unless you want to
do any of ther first two option, you can either buy a similar one for less. or you can switch your telly off yourself, or get a friend to stay in your house when your away

up to you.

I am a self-confessed tech geek and I LOVE this product! It comes with the bare minimum of packaging and instructions and takes about 2 minutes to set up (I did it whilst simultaneously feeding my toddler son) a classic example of something that does exactly what it says it should with no fuss. Why isn't everything built like this?

The first time I turned a light on with my iphone was joyous, the neighbours probably wondered why the heck I was dancing round the living room! Is this a necessary bit of kit? Probably not, I still can't think of anything I actually need to control from outside the house, BUT turning a light on with your *phone* from another room? That's just cool!!!

This was something I really wanted to like, but it was actually just short of useless. I did give it many chances and really tried to get it to work several times, but it just wouldn't.

It's potentially a great idea, and a type of product that is part of the future of the internet where ordinary objects (not just PCs, phones etc but lights, heaters etc) can have IP addresses and be controlled via the internet. Having a plug that can be turned on or off from anywhere in the world, or combined with other events such as via the IFTTT site, has masses of possibilities and I was looking forward to trying them out - but sadly didn't get the chance.

The setup is really easy and I installed the iPhone app and connected to the unit. However, I had to try and try again to connect to my home network. It did connect a couple of times and the switching worked as it should - I left the house and it still had a connection for about an hour, so all looked good - but then the switch dropped off the network and I couldn't operate it any more. When I got back, I reset the unit and got it reconnected, but shortly after, it again dropped off the network. I haven't been able to connect it since and have finally given up.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, resetting the device but nothing has worked. Some reviewers have suggested it is the router at fault (I haven't tried it on any other networks), but although my router is provided by O2, I can connect everything else to it wirelessly - including PS3, iPad, iPhone, Xbox, Wii, Laptop, Macbook, Smart TV, DS, PS Vita - so do I need to spend money on a new router just to make this one product work?

I am going to contact product support to see if they can suggest what I should do - if they can do something, I'll update this review, but until then, Belkin, I am very disappointed.

I decided that I needed to trial a Belkin WeMo to accompany the vast array of light switches etc that I have installed around our house to automate our use of mainly lamps. My initial aim was to save electricity, but also to automate some functions, like switching on lights outside and groups of lights in various rooms; they are very impressive to use and saves walking round to several lamps etc to switch them on. Enter Apple into the arena, I have an ipad and iphone, wife has similar, son has an ipod touch, so bingo, we can all turn the lights on and off.

From a more serious point of view, we are becoming increasingly dependant on many things via our touch based tablets and smart phones and the switches that I had previously used all require a control, which added up with those from sky, the tv, dvd etc, plus my phone and pad, simply increase the clutter around the home. I have now dispensed with the sky controller (ipad and iphone have apps for that). It was only a matter of time before apple started to take over my lights etc. I must admit that it is extremely easy to set up, less than two minutes, using the single card attached to the box lid, instal the app, configure it and away it went.

The only thing that I need now is something to connect to it! Providing that I dispense with all of the other gadgets and replace them with the WeMo instead, I am sure that it will be worthwhile, but considering the amount that I have spent so far I could only really recommend these to apple geeks, or if you were left behind and didn't buy remote control plugs before and are starting from scratch, they might be better for you.

So why only 3 stars? Two reasons really, the plugs are huge and far bigger than the stand alone plugs that I use. The second reason is expense.
