3.0 out of 5 stars Belkin USB Wireless Adaptor with Windows Vista - Feb 2007, 14 Feb 2007
By Mr. Wayne Stock (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I do repairs on computers as a hobby. I purchased this item, to save having superfluous cables when using the internet. I already have a wireless broadband router installed.
Having read the previous reviews, it is obvious that some people did have problems installing this device.
I took their advice and DID NOT follow the manufacturers instructions. I DID NOT install the software before plugging in the adaptor. I DID use the desktop extension lead supplied. It DOES make a difference. (I later tried it without the extension lead)
(The PC I was running was using the new Windows Vista operating system)
The computer immediately picked up the new hardware and asked to connect to the internet to find the necessary drivers. I declined that and merely used the browse facility to browse to the Drivers file on the CD that came with the adaptor. It installed and works fine.
I found: That the software on the CD is unnecessary - The driver files are tiny - the software is huge. See earlier reviews for details of problems with the software. I also found that the reception was better USING the desktop extension lead. And yes, the XP drivers DO work with Vista and XP. I hope this helps someone else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works for me in Windows XP and in a Linux Distro (PClinuxOS), 26 Feb 2006
By Oscillator (Carluke) - See all my reviews
Must admit I'm not a great fan of Belkin's products but as this was cheapish decided to give it a try. Okay, the driver isn't digitally signed but I've lost count of the number of devices that's happened to me with (tv cards, midi keyboards etc) but which still work through perfectly using the manufacturer's supplied driver. So don't let that spook you. It works in Windows although the signal maybe isn't all that strong. Plus it's relatively cheap from Amazon and easy to install. After installation in XP you can either use XP's own wireless configuration utility or Belkins. Belkins's own is slightly homemade looking but it does work.

I also got it to work under Linux (PCLinuxOS distro) without any hassle by using Ndiswrapper and loading the inf.file from the Belkin CD. I don't know if it works under any other linux distros. I am actually writing this under Linux and my router is a Netgear DG834G

This Belkin wireless device is fine for wireless surfing but it's not completely useless for wireless gaming although I didn't expect it would be. Wired is still your best bet if you want to networl computers together for games.

At this price point though this is adequate enough.

So don't expect the moon on a stick and you'll be reasonably pleased with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Simple to use, 26 Oct 2005
By K. To "ghost99999" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For those of you who wouldn't dream of opening up your pc, this is the answer. Although I know how to open one up i chose to buy one of these 6 months ago for £25, now its £17 so its a real bargain. Just install the drivers then add the adaptor and its ready to go. Mine came with an extention lead but im not sure about this version. After 6 months its still working at full speed with my Linksys WRT54g router.

The only down side is that you MUST HAVE USB2, otherwise the speed will stay at 11mps. If u have usb1 and care about speed then stick to a pci card.

Another thing, I did have problems with the WEP encryption: having to repair my wirless connection upon every boot, but this is just a little hassle. the problem was fixed when i changed to WAP encryption and now it works perfectly.

I havent tried any other wireless usb product but i would certainly recommend this one.
