Living in a rural upland area I am plagued by summer thunderstorms. Having lost several Internet routers and, tragically, an IBM ThinkPad to lightning strikes I am no stranger to different types of surge suppressor. My expensive and stupid mistake had been to assume that a power surge would be most likely to enter the property via the power lines. This has proved to be incorrect. My poor ThinkPad was fried by a lightning strike hitting a nearby telephone line and taking out both the router and my laptop. Too late I realised the ADSL line was an unprotected entry point.
Having belatedly purchased a Belkin SurgeMaster Maximum (F9M823UK2) I proceeded to ensure the ADSL (BT) line was now passing through the Belkin en route to the modem. A subsequent violent summer hailstorm resulted in a dramatic strike on the nearby telephone line just as I was in the process of starting to unplug everything. The bang and white flash that occurred two feet from my hands took out the Belkin power strip but went no further than that. My Netgear router, switch and replacement ThinkPad were all saved.
I have uploaded images of the BT plug that was in the Belkin at the time. You can see for yourself the scorch marks on the plastic.
I now only buy one brand of surge suppressor - Belkin. I also ensure that *all* cables entering the house to electronic devices are shielded by Belkin power strips, especially during the Summer months.
This product gets 5 stars because I watched as it did its job in dramatic style right in front of me.
