In at attempt to please everyone and appear to cover as much ground as possible, this book ends up thin and superficial. The lay out is clear, maps are good, but every drop is squeezed out of dull places with very little for tourists - like Dangriga (a one street tumble-down town) and Belize City (sketchy and with very little to see), leaving very little space for what is intersting about Belize - its rich heritage and culture, wildlife and Garifuna music. The history of Belize takes just a few pages to relate, there's not much at all on the Garifuna (beyond a box), nothing but the commonplace for wildlife - a real draw in this country. Perhaps most irritatingly the guide has no voice, no opinion and no flavour. I'd rather have an opinion I disagree with than no opinion at all. The guide could have been written by a telephone salesman.
On the practical side, the book covers the ground but again fails to inspire or help make choices. There's far too much on dull places and at times it seems that the writer just wants to list the maximum possible of everything at the expense of expressing a real opinion on anything. In the internet age do we really need huge lists of banks, internet cafes, libraries and so on.
Reviews can be uniformative and irritating for instance for 'the Happy Lobster' restaurant on Caye Caulker the guide tells us 'the lobster is not actually happy at this Caulker institution but you will be after eating big plates of fresh fish' which is trite and says nothing of any use. The hotel descriptions were usually better but often equally bland and again the overall impression is that everything is subordniate to appearing to cover as much ground as possible and fitting the writing into a pre-proscribed editorial and design formula. Lonely Planet guides to tend to all read the same no matter who the author is and what the destination.
When I got to Belize I found it a really exciting place. I loved the Lighthouse Reef and Blue Hole, laid-back Hopkins, the gentle sway of the music and the quirky mix of cultures. I'm not sure I'd have known I'd like it if I'd read this guide before going.
