I first discovered Justin on YouTube back in 2008, shortly before his success. I was searching for "With You" covers and came across Justin's. I thought he sung it amazingly, especially for his age. Since then I have liked some of his music, but not all of it. Sometimes the obsessive nature of his fans becomes overwhelming and overshadows his music, which can be mediocre and generic in nature. That said I have listened to his old album a lot and do enjoy a reasonable selection of his songs. Growing up as a teen, now 21, alongside his music I have been looking for a more mature and developed sound from him.
Believe just about reaches this. It has a more R&B/Soul vibe to it, though it still retains a number of pop songs to give it variety. It's heavily inspired by the likes of Justin Timberlake and Michael Jackson. It also has hints of British dub-step, and euro-pop - think David Guetta. He is certainly aiming at a wider audience, a smart move since his fans (I guess I'm one of them) are growing up too. I give him credit for writing some of each of the songs on the album. It is difficult to have the creative freedom in such a commercial industry. Not all the album is great; a few songs are arguably weak. However it is a nice album with a selection of pleasant songs. For that reason I give it 4/5.
