Prior to purchasing 'Bel Air' a few weeks ago the last Guano Apes release I bought was the highly impressive 'Don't Give Me Names' over 10 years ago. I was intrigued as to how the band would now sound. The album kicks off with the infectious 'Sunday Lover'. A good opener and probably the best track on the album. It gets the balance right between mainstream catchiness whilst retaining the distinctive Apes vibe. The next song 'Oh What A Night' sounds very FM friendly with a big chorus and it becomes obvious that Guano Apes have definitely chosen a more commercial direction. Had this song been on one of their older albums it would have undoubtedly sounded more raw, here it's quite a throwaway number that I'd expect teenage girls to dance to at a high school disco rather than the bands core fanbase who surely must be between 25-35?

Another damp squib is 'She's A Killer', the song is buried beneath a high level of compression that simply does Guano Apes no favours whatsoever (for a moment I thought I was listening to the Scissor Sisters), again had this had a more organic natural sound it may well have been a good track. Some songs however come across well, 'When The Ships Arrive' & 'This Time' are solid tunes but the filler material here renders Bel Air a resoundingly undistinguished album, had the Apes released an EP with the best 4 tracks I would have been very impressed.

For anyone curious as to where the band are at now I'd approach with caution and maybe check out a few of the tracks on Youtube etc before buying. Although some tracks are not suited to the production and probably sound better played live the point is there's several songs here which wouldn't have got anywhere near the old Apes albums. Still I'm not sorry I bought it but just don't expect an essential album.

First off, let me say that Walking On A Thin Line (Guano Apes' last album) is one of my all time favourites. And that being said, i found Bel Air slightly disapointing.
At first as there seemed to be too few catchy quirky tunes on the album. However, once you give it a couple of listens it does grow on you. Where WOATL had instant appeal with songs like 'You Can't Stop Me', 'Sing That Song', 'Sugar Skin', 'Diokahn', 'Storm' & 'Dick', Bel Air has fewer stompers like 'She's A Killer', 'Tiger', 'All I Wanna Do' & 'Trust'.
I dont know whether it's pressure from the label or if the band's just softened a bit but there are too many mainstream run-of-the-mill songs on here that you'd NEVER have associated with the Guano Apes of 10 years ago. But never the less, it's great to see they've returned. Let's just hope the next album sees them return to their rock-funk best :)

Hanging out with old friends 21 May 2011

I love the Apes, I like the new CD, a couple of the songs really stand out for me and have made it into my roadtrip collection. Just like hanging out with old friends, they dont seem to have the juice they used to, but I love hearing there stuff anyways. If you are new to the Guano Apes, I suggest the Best and the Lost (T) Apes CD over this one. If you love the apes from way back, go ahead and pick it up.
Great Comeback Album from Underrated Band 16 Jan. 2012

Im not a huge Guano Apes fan although I have always liked Sandra's voice and Ude's bass playing. I picked up their albums after I heard the great songs "You Can't Stop me" "Loards of the Boards" "Break the Line" and of course "Open Your Eyes" but never got into them too much for soem reason.

That being said, I think this new album is alot of fun, full of energy and has great hooks all over the place. They have stuck to their pattern of not being confined to one particular genre of Rock or Metal. But now they seem to be expanding their sound with some key uses of synths, drum machines and some very raw sounding guitars. All around good agressive songs, uptempo with nice loud guitar work. And Sandra's voice is a marvel. Alternates from almost Death Metal screaming to whispering to a fun sarcastic tone. Great fun to listen to. Alot of the songs are short though and stick to one theme pretty literally... some even having 3 or 4 repeated passages per song. Gets a little monotonous(sp?) but doesnt take away from the great energy each track has. The only thing lacking is a real hard song... something like "open your eyes" or "you can't stop me." They do heavy so well that its ashame there isnt one all out Heavy song here.

"She's a killer" has nice use of synths. "Tiger" is prob my fave track for its almost punk sounding guitars. "All i wanna do" has nice drums and the chorus has hard guitars in it. "Fanman" is very slow and sexy but then goes into this frenzied style. Very fitting for the subject matter hahaha. Bonus track "Fire" has a pretty cool intro, very video game like but more aggressive than its counterpart "Fire in your Eyes." All in all, the only tracks I dont really like much are the singles "What a night" and "Sunday Lover."
Different but good 2 April 2012

As an avid Apes fan for years now, I had been very sad with the annoucement that this band would never make another album. When Bel Air came out, I immediately listened to the clips and closed the webpage, telling my husband that I was done with the Apes. They sound very different - the earlier aggression is long gone ("Killer" reminds us that they still have it, but it is not so prominent as in other recordings). I discovered myself coming back to the site to listen again to the clips a few more times. Then I bought the album. This is obviously still the Apes but they have grown and you can tell they are at a different point in their lives than when the other music was released. The album is just as good - the musicians and vocalist just as talented as ever - offering a different feel to it. If you can follow them on their journey, great! They do seem to project an ever present certainty in themselves and confidence that is contagious. The songs will stick with you (at times you will wish there were offical lyrics anywhere in sight!) and I found that I enjoy this album just as much as the others and eagerly await another release.
The Mighty Guano Apes-Pure Dynamite! 29 Dec. 2011

This album is fantastic, it's recorded and mixed to perfection. It's Germany's No Doubt, but with a much harder edge with in your face guitars with the no nonsense singing and creative writing of Sandra. 'Sunday Lover', 'Oh What a Night' and 'This Time' are killer songs with great hooks. Do yourself a favor and watch the newest(2011)live performances of Guano Apes on youtube. The concert audiences go crazy for this group. Extra special note: The drummer, Dennis Poschwatta, is the best musician in the group. His playing and technique is world class, just superb. He doesn't overplay the arrangements. Fast Hands, Big Foot and tasty cymbal work. It's a Master Class in Rock Drumming.

Why they aren't touring America? No airplay/record label support. Plus no other American band would dare have them open for them, why? They would upstage Metallica, et al, they're that good live. And when they close with "Lords of the Boards" it's mass hysteria.

Play this album LOUD for the best effect.

Highly Recommended.
I Can't Stop Playing This CD... Nor Do I Want To 6 April 2012

I was a fan of "Lord of the Boards" and "Open Your Eyes" in the late 90s, but, then, I sorta forgot about the Guano Apes. I came across "Bel Air" browsing Amazon and bought it without hearing it. I was floored! What an amazing group of songs. "Trust" drew me in immediately with its intense power chords as Sandra Nasic sings "Oh, my god, it's happening again," her closing declaration that "You should not count on me" was the punctuation mark that slapped me upside the head and the track's hidden bonus "Running Out The Darkness" is the perfect encore. "When The Ships Arrive" starts out as a ballad, but the chorus just propels the song along. "All I Wanna Do" is a great song for the car as its driving drum and bass have great momentum. With the instrumentation building tension, you can hear the trepidation in Nasic's voice in "Fanman". And I can't say why, but "Fire In Your Eyes" is so well written it makes my eyes water. God, I hope the Guano Apes come back to tour America... soon.
