Review

'There is an incredible freshness and optimism about Shieber's stories that is very rare in writing today. He's like a wonderful new biscuit you've never tried before. Open it up, have a bite, then take the packet home and devour it.' - Laura Hird (Author, Hope and Other Stories) --Laura Hird, Author - Hope and Other Stories

Product Description

A confident, poignant collection filtered with debauchery, melancholy and black humour, 'Being Normal' is an examination of loneliness, rejection and the idiosyncrasies of living in and against contemporary society. Stephen Shieber brings together the glory of everyday nothingness and elevates it to great drama; where loveless marriage, teen angst, childhood misadventure, lonely Christmases and family dysfunction are the norm. Each character in this stunning debut provides a very different slant on the notion of mundane - a book for anyone who has ever found themselves on the outside, dancing to the beat of their own drum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Being a great collection of short stories!, 25 Aug 2008
By B (Geordie Watcher) (North East England) - See all my reviews
Publishers would have us believe that there's no market for short stories. This book exposes that myth for what it really is.

The characters in this collection are beautifully written and the reader is quickly drawn to care about their fate. The stories are written with a light touch and a humour, even when dealing with incredibly dark topics, such as domestic violence or assisted suicide. Highly recommended if you like your fiction fresh and intelligent. I'm another one who can't wait for the next Stephen Shieber!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read, 6 Aug 2008
By **APS** "Mrs APS" (North East, UK) - See all my reviews
Not being an avid reader of short stories, I did not know what to expect. From the moment I sat down with the book, I was drawn in, not being able to put it down. Shiebers stories are warming, emotional and dark in places but make for a fantastic read. My only grumble would be it left me wanting more!! When's Shiebers next book out?!

4.0 out of 5 stars Being Different, 15 Jul 2008
By L. J. Williams (Derbyshire, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
'Being Normal' is about everyday people and everyday situations, with short stories that stand alone as melancholy, reflective and thoughtful musings of what it is to be human and come alive as a celebration of 'Being Different' as they sit side by side on the printed page.

Shieber tells the tales of self-harm, death, domestic violence and the overwhelming desire to be a super-hero with a potent mix of lightness of touch and a sprinkling of dark humour, which invites you to sit at the window to these characters- all of whom undoubtedly mirror the concerns, hopes, dreams and fears of each and every one of us- in a state of empathetic understanding.

A great book to dip in and out of as a holiday read, and an even better one to keep your thoughts mulling over about ourselves and each other long after the summer tan fades.
