Product Description

Synopsis

A voice for those who were silenced. This is a powerful account of a life that reflects recent Chilean history from the 1960s to the present through the author?s extraordinary personal experiences. It recounts his magical, sometimes harsh, childhood, his development as a left-wing activist, his arrest and torture by the military regime and eventual exile to England. It is a story of love and survival in a time when the young were prepared to sacrifice everything, including their lives, for a better future. When ordinary people did great things and dared to dream great dreams. Uplifting, at times devastating, this story will move everyone who reads it. It speaks for a lost generation who paid the ultimate price for their ideals.

I was moved to tears by this book. It's very easy to read all the factual details of what happened under the Pinochet regime in Chile but this book lets you experience the unfolding of events and the brutal oppression that followed it directly through the eyes of a survivor. The style of writing is very poetic and I really enjoyed the childhood stories about the markets in Santiago and an amazing trip across the desert. It was sometimes difficult to read about the horrific torture that happened and the horrible fear that gripped the author and his companions when they knew that most of them would die. But ultimately it is a story about hope, about the triumph of the human spirit in an extreme situation. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

I picked up this book at a friends house, and within minutes of flicking through it, I was totally gripped by the story. I am aware of the Chilean tragedy with the Military Coup in 1973 and the dark years of Pinochet's brutal regime thereafter. But this book has brought to life the realities of what it was like for many living in Chile at that time. It is a deeply tender and tragic story, and the accounts of this man's experience living through such losses of dear loved ones and his sharing of the incomprehensible cruelty of the soldiers in the military prisons towards fellow human beings is heart breaking and sickening. Yet the incredible strength of heart for this man to withstand such brutal horrors is profound. Inevitably forced to leave Chile and his family behind to find exile in the UK. This story reflects the pain herein to piece a life back together after such extreme trauma, leading eventually to an opportunity to bring about criminal justice. I am touched and grateful to read the experiences of one who has survived breaking-point and yet who's heart is so intact with integrity and care for human kind. Thank you Luis Munoz for sharing your story, and creating hope.

Luis Muñoz tells his story of chilean freedom fighter (before and after the Pinochet's dictatorship), but also the story of the thousands of victims of torture and human humiliation inflicted by the military to the chilean people: the "disappeared" political prisoners. In a very direct, sincere and moving style, Luis has been able to say to the world what so many survivors of horror (me included) are still keeping for themselves as unspeakeable, painful, and silent memories. A story of dignity and of his victory of love over insane political bestiality.
