More About the Author

Sheila Kitzinger M.B.E, M.Litt was a social anthropologist of birth and author of 24 books published internationally, most on the emotional journey through this major life experience. At Oxford in the 50s she discovered that the social anthropology of that time was almost entirely about men. She decided she would do research to discover what was important in women's lives, and focused on pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.
Her five children were all born at home. She lectures widely in different countries and has learned from mothers and midwives in the USA and Canada, the Caribbean, Eastern and Western Europe, Israel, Australia and New Zealand, Latin America, South Africa and Japan, and from women in prison and those who have had a traumatic birth experience.
Her books include The New Experience of Childbirth, Understanding Your Crying Baby, Politics of Birth, Birth Crisis, the updated classic The New Pregnancy and Childbirth: Choices and Challenges and Birth & Sex.
She died in April 2015. Her autobiography A Passion for Birth is published in May 2015.

Being Born is a most amazing book. I was loaned it many years ago by a close friend who had bought it for her daughter. The book is designed to be read to children about when they were in the womb at various stages from conception through to birth.
The stunning beauty of the photographs of a foetus within the womb are difficult to describe with words. They truly portray the miracle of nature and of birth itself.
I am now looking for the book to buy as a present for my as-yet unborn grandchild - the first child of my middle son and his wife..

I bought this book for my two young sons, aged 8 and 4. This was over 20 years ago and my younger boy liked it so much, he said he wanted to be a doctor when he grew up.
He never changed his mind and he is now qualified (and loves it)!
This is an extremely informative and marvellous book.

I bought this book after hearing some positive reviews on a parenting forum. I have not been disappointed in any way with my purchase this book is amazing. The text is a little old for my children (4&2) currently, but the stunning pictures alone make this a fantastic purchase. When they are older the text will be more relevant to them and I see this book being on our shelves for many, many years to come.

The book shows pictures and the story of the development of a baby in the womb. It begins with the fertilisation of the egg and end with the baby being born. While the pictures are very realistic they are not traumatising and have sparked some interesting discussions.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children who are interested in how babies are made and grown or anyone wanting to talk about a new arrival expected in the family.

This book was given to us when we were expecting our first son and we loved seeing the stages of development. It has become a favorite of our sons from the moment when they both first asked "what happened when we were in your tummy?".

If YOU are ready to talk about IT 1 July 2004

Beautiful photographs of LIFE - from the ovum and sperm joining together to the baby's head emerging at birth, this book takes you there. My son loved looking at the pictures. My husband and I had to take a deep breath to read the part that tells how the sperm gets in there to begin with. He's 7 and it was time. This was the best possible way. Amazing pictures!

A teacher recommended this book to me to show my daughter the graphic nature of birth to prepare for her presence at my labor and delivery. I was very happy when it arrived because it is full of pictures that my daughter loved to look at and would refer to as "baby brother". Truly, the pictures are beautiful and touching. The words are very informative and educational. My daughter learned quite a bit, but being 4 might be young to really understand it all. The author tells the story of the journey of "you". One page describes: "Millions of sperm, much smaller than the ovum, were in the testicles behind your fathers penis. When your mother and father felt very loving, they kissed and cuddled eachother. Your fathers penis became hard so that it could slide into your mothers vagina, the soft opening between her legs which leads to her uterus..." and so on. The book has a poem like quality. For example: "Soon you would be born. You had been inside your mother all the time from autumn, when the leaves were falling, till summer, when the sun shone hot. Or from summer till the next spring came and the birds built thier nests. or from spring till winter, when frost patterns formed on the windowpane and cold winds blew. You weren't kicking as much now because there was so little room..." I love this book. More importantly, it served its purpose to educate my daughter AND she loved it as well.
wonderful book 9 Dec. 2009

This is a wonderful book, the photos are just amazing. I was already familiar with this book, which is why I purchased it for my daughter, who is very interested in babies and how they develop. If she actually reads the whole book, it will also be a welcome way to let her in on how exactly the fertilization happens (I haven't had the guts to tell her yet). It is described very matter-of-fact somewhere in there.

I was not impressed with the condition of the book however. I bought it used, because it was described as "like new", but after it arrived I noticed that many, many pages are stuck together with some gluey stuff, and when I tried to pry them open, it left nasty marks on the beautiful photos.

Every weekend my mother would take my sister and I to the public library when we were young, and every weekend I would read this book there. It was my favourite. It was easy to read and had amazing pictures to capture the imagination. This is the book that started me on my long road towards becoming an OB/GYN. 16 years later, I am currently in my 4th year at medical school, and I plan on applying for an OB/GYN residency next year. This is an amazing book, and from time to time I still think back fondly on it. Great book!
