Being Abigail details the history of the endearing and headstrong Abigail Carter. Based on a blog by an Adelaide author, the character can best be described as an Australian Bridget Jones. In spite of (or more accurately because of) her flaws and mood swings, the protagonist engages your empathy. She is a modern young Australian woman of her time, living in a world that is at once fantastic and yet immensely ordinary. Abigail is the daughter of a rock star and constantly in extraordinary circumstances, but it is her down to earth nature that particularly engages the reader; her habit of overreacting, ocker speech and willingness to punch her way out of a situation, that drive you to barrack for her ultimate success. It is impossible to avoid falling into Abigail's world. You suspend your disbelief and succumb to a genuine affection for this passionate individual as she develops from a headstrong girl into a well-rounded young woman. This is a wonderful novel from a developing young Australian author, and is a pleasure that is over far too soon.
