I'd been using a Vox modelling amp with my Strat and hadn't realised how much it coloured the sound even when the modelling is 'off'. The MIC200 through the same amp(?) gives a truer sound for the Strat and some nice overdrive when required. Yes it's a modelling pre-amp but with cleaner sound. It's easy to hook one's guitar up to a PC say if you want use soft amps. Therre are various settings for guitar, voice, acoustic etc or create your own. For mic use it's great. I was using a Samson USB mic and had no end of trouble trying to get work well via my PC - I gave up. This though makes it a doddle to use a mic in Cubase or Sonar. Coupling it with the Behringer C-1 mic creates a bargain combination which gives very good sound output. Shop around for a good price since it varies a lot.

This kit is excellent. I have used it as pre amp for recording acoustic guitar and vocals with 2 types of condenser mics over 3 weeks or so and the results are great. it warms the recordings up without wrecking the tone. I read a couple of reviews saying it is noisy - can't understand why - the noise doesn't come from this pre amp. It takes a few seconds to stabilise when you switch it on, but the LEDs also stabilise when it is ready to go. solidly made easy to use - great. Only one word of advice - it does not work well if you put very high settings on the pre amp - the limiter is very fierce. This is not a problem as you soon get used to picking the subtle settings and avoiding the very extreme settings. I have not compared it to other models so cannot give that comparative perspective, but In my view I would say this is one of the best studio upgrades you can get for around for £30+.

This is a very low cost amp and give brilliant results. The colouring of the value is just on the money giving recordings real life where a solid state amp does not.

I would totally disregard complaints about noise because:
1) It is noisy when cold - it is a value amp (tube) - so it needs to warm up!
2) Once warm the amp is very quiet, as quiet as low end solid state amps. If you want better, you'll have to pay big money and then you'll need something like a Rode condenser mike to tell the difference.

Take home message - this is 1950's technology wrapped up in 2010 convenience - but at its heart is a electromechanical thermionic value - give it time and treat it properly :)
