Book Description

"A fascinating account of a bygone era by former racer, constructor and driver manager Ken Gregory."
Autosport

"A vivid, close-up picture of 1950s racing told by a man who was friends with Collins, Hawthorn and Bueb. It's much more than a history – and it's told by a first-hand witness."
Motor Sport

"A very insightful book into motor racing in the 1950s, this book is as readable today as it ever was. The download is available from Amazon for the Kindle and if this is how you like to read your books nowadays then this surely is a must."
BRDC Bulletin

Reproduced for the first time in over 50 years, Behind the Scenes of Motor Racing is an enthralling tale from the birth of modern motor sport.
It describes the Golden Age of the sport in all its glory — its chivalry, heroism and humour — but also its tragedy through the loss of so many of the author’s friends and colleagues among the young drivers of the day.

Ken Gregory, at the time “Britain’s most famous racing manager”, not only raced himself, but also became a racing car constructor with the Kieft Company, organised the very first race meeting at Brands Hatch as well as events at Silverstone and throughout the UK, achieved a number of speed records, thrashed out business deals with Enzo Ferrari, Count Adolfo Orsi of Maserati and Neubauer of Mercedes, managed both Stirling Moss and Peter Collins and founded the first commercially sponsored Formula 1 team years before it became the norm.
The central story of the book details the fascinating bond he shared with Stirling Moss and the twists and turns they shared as he went from being friend and confidant to Manager of one of the most famous sportsmen on the planet, still regarded by many to be the greatest British driver who has ever lived.
The book also provides unique insights into many other Formula 1 legends of the time and life behind the scenes from the starting grid of World Championship circuits around the globe.

This unparalleled experience of and access to the different aspects of this emerging sport makes for a gripping read that remains as exciting today as it was when first published – “the non-stop story of the racing circuits and the men and women who live for speed” as a contemporary review described it.

Original foreword by Stirling Moss

More About the Author

During the Golden Age of motor racing Ken Gregory (1926-2013), was known as "Britain's most famous racing manager". He not only raced himself, but also became a racing car constructor with the Kieft Company, organised the very first race meeting at Brands Hatch as well as events at Silverstone and throughout the UK, achieved a number of speed records, thrashed out business deals with Enzo Ferrari, Count Adolfo Orsi of Maserati and Neubauer of Mercedes, managed both Stirling Moss and Peter Collins and founded the first commercially sponsored Formula 1 team years before it became the norm.
The early part of his career is covered in Behind the Scenes of Motor Racing, originally published in 1960 and republished for the first time as an epub in November 2012.
The latter part of his equally eventful time in motor sport will be covered in a second volume of his memoirs, to be published in 2014.
After leaving the world of Formula 1 he had a remarkably wide-ranging career, including founding both Cars and Car Conversions magazines and Gregory Air Taxis, a private air taxi business notable among other things for being the mode of transport chosen by John Lennon and Yoko Ono to enable them to get married in Gibraltar.

Excellent to see that this fascinating book has been re-issued after all these years. Ken Gregory was a major influence 'behind the scenes' in the 1950s and early 1960s. First read this book back in the 1960s and still have a treasured. battered copy. You can only buy second hand copies now, so having the book on Kindle is good news.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book, couldn't put it down. 1 Dec. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A fantastic book, a must-read for fans of motor racing. Any follower of modern grand prix racing will find both the similarities and stark contrast between racing now and in the 50's and 60's enthralling. Whilst die-hard fans will revel in technical aspects of book, it's strongest point is the beautifully told rollercoaster story of the relationship between Ken and Stirling and the incredible rise they engineered together. From grass-roots racing at Brands Hatch, to Ken negotiating terms with Maserati, Mercedes and Stirling fighting with Fangio on the track.
