Product Description

Product Description

She was described as the most dangerous woman in Europe by Adolf Hitler; Noel Coward said people who spent any time with her were always reduced to 'gibbering worshippers'; she adored Margaret Thatcher and disliked Germans; she found the French comical and hankered for the old days of Empire and Commonwealth. Above all, though, she was loved by the nation and in this affectionate and often hilarious inside story of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, her former equerry Major Colin Burgess reveals what life was like living with the most private of all the Royals. "Behind Palace Doors" is a unique and warmly remembered historic insight into one of our longest-surviving institutions. Constantly fascinating and packed with previously untold stories, this is also a celebration of a life gone - and a way of life fast disappearing.

Quite informative but sometimes repetitive but generally an easy read good to get some insight into the inner workings of the royal family.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting! 26 Mar 2013

Made for an interesting, behind-the-scenes view of the rarified lives of the royal family. Is a little partisan in places (e.g. the Diana v. Charles camps). I would recommend it to Royalist readers, however.

I feel that the Authour could have condensed the actual content of the pages into a book half as long. That said, most of the little anecdotes describing the character of the Queen Mother were very amusing and as a result entertaining. The book does provide an amazing, and interesting insight into life within the walls of the Royal palaces.I found this book fascinating,as a fan of the Queen Mother, but feel in order to enjoy this book, the reader should not take some of what is presented as fact, too seriously. On the whole, quite a good, light hearted read.

A really interesting read that gives an insight into the world that was the Queen Mother. Someone from a different age living in the 20th century. Lots of things to make you smile. Champagne, lavish picnics, horses and a wicked sense of humour.

This book is not well written, and before I finished it I was becoming irritated by the style. If you are a fan of the royals it might be worth reading.
