5.0 out of 5 stars A very good work on Klansmen profile in the 1920s., 26 Feb 2001
By s_genta@yahoo.fr (Sussex University, England) - See all my reviews
A very pertinent and persuasive interpretation of the Invisible Empire at its apogee in the 1920s. MacLean precisely depicts the world Klansmen lived in, as well as the ideology and the principles they defended so vehemently. Her work focuses mainly on the Athens Klan, Georgia, but has got a more global and nationwide perspective. It also aims at understanding the psychological and socioeconomic factors which were present in the "Jazz Age" and which spawned the revival of the secret order by Imperial Wizard William J. Simmons. A brilliant work which proves once again that the Ku Klux Klan is really a constant in the American mind, only waiting for the social fabric to become unstable to re-emerge.
