Product Description

The Black Eyed Peas' debut, Behind the Front, may sound thoroughly familiar: like A Tribe Called Quest, they sprout positive, deftly delivered lyrics out of their light jazz, R&B, and funk tracks; like the Roots, this multi-ethnic outfit's three MCs drop science in front of a live band that builds its grooves organically; and at their best, such as on the pop and reggae-flavoured "Karma", the group can out-Fugee the Fugees. For some reason, though, the mostly mild, largely scratchless and sample-free record can--at times--be downright tepid. But for the most part, it works--sometimes brilliantly--and as a break from the mostly belligerent voices in hip-hop's mainstream, we can definitely use more of what the Peas have to offer. --Roni Sarig

5.0 out of 5 stars Legendary Hip Hop 5 Jan 2001
Format:Audio CD
What can I say, I've probably got up to 100 hip hop records, but this album was the best buy I've ever made. Yeah, its hip hop, but its calm, relaxing and groovy. Yet somehow you still find yourself literally jumping around the place with the beats. I love this record and want to marry it. Its the album for driving around town impressing ladies and it never leaves my car. Big up and respect to the peas! it's a shame the new album 'bridging the gap' just aint as good and original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is the Peas. 31 July 2004
By mos-def
Format:Audio CD
The only place people have heard of the Black Eyed Peas at the moment is with Fergie in the group and the dropping of all they portray on this album, which is rap music and hip hop culture. Not dwelling on that issue too much, this is arguably the best of their first two albums (i.e. pre-Elephunk)
It runs low on guest appearances, which works both to the album's adavantage (you get a real feel of the Peas work) and to a slight disadvantage (collaborations with emcees like Mos Def and De La Soul give variety to the music) However, it is undoubtedly something special and held in high esteem in my collection. This album has some fantastic beats thanks to, and the Peas raps are flawless in both content and sound.
You need to hear this album if you are truly into rap music. Sellout chart acts like DMX and 50 Cent are not the only artists in the genre and this album is a fantastic oppurtunity to hear what rap music is really about, instead of the warped image these gangster rappers give to people in their songs. If you buy this album (which you need to) and like what you hear (which you have to) you should definitely try something like Jurassic Five's "J5" or A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders". If you get into this type of rap music (it's essential you do if you claim to like rap music) I can guarantee you will never go back.
You will see how pathetic emcees like 50 Cent and DMX really are and realise that they are not REAL, their music and lyrics are WACK. And these artists are representing rap music and even black culture? It's wrong, buy albums by rappers like Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Aceyalone and you will see the light.

5.0 out of 5 stars A style beyound styles 13 Jan 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Black eye peas can only truely be described as prolific, and the next step to elevating rap to a new level. This is done through the peas successful development and delivery of a rap style which reflects both pure interlect and inate talent. Add to this beats which will make your head nod invoultarily, and a sound so fresh and funky you'll feel like you just placed your head in a bucket of cold water, and you've got an album which continues and develops the interlectual/herbal rap styles of groups like de la soul,a tribe called quest, and Gang starr, but adds a real soulfull and funky vibe. In short black eyed peas are superior. Peace

5.0 out of 5 stars Class 22 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
Paid and received within a few days. So pleased I purchased this class cd. Having previously been to see the Black Eyed Peas I wanted to complete my selection of their music to look at how it has developed. Definitely recommend the purchase of this whether you want to play it loud in the car or recognise the diversity of the tracks.
