Product Description

Belfast Telegraph, June 17th, 1999

An explosive new book published today reveals to the public for the first time the practices and bizarre initiation rites of the mysterious brotherhood, the Royal Arch Purple Order. Entitled Behind Closed Doors, it has been written by a former member of the order, 33-year-old Co Down man Paul Malcomson. Neil Johnston reports. In the book, which has taken him seven years to research and write, he looks at the Royal Arch Purple Order from an evangelical point of view - he himself is a born again Christian. In the book, Mr Malcomson describes the inauguration ceremony as follows: "The oath-bound Royal Arch Purple aspirant is prepared for initiation in typically Masonic manner, by being stripped of much of his clothes. "He is divested of his coat and vest, collar and tie, shoes and socks. One shoe is then placed on the candidate's left bare foot, and the legs of his trousers rolled up above the knee, his left breast being bare. "The candidate is then blindfolded and a piece of purple ribbon is fastened to the front of the candidate's shirt or other garment. "Clearly, the Arch Purple initiate by participating in such a ceremony is aligning himself with those initiated into the mysteries throughout the centuries.

The Observer, Oct. 24th, 1999

Paul Malcomson has been campaigning in Northern Ireland to persuade fundamentalists in the Orange Order to throw away their sashes and bowler hats. A born-again Christian Loyalist, he now poses a bigger threat to the Protestant organisation than the fiercest nationalist residents' groups. Malcomson recently published a book, Behind Closed Doors, which claims to lift the lid on the Orange Order, which claims 80,000 members in Scotland. He hopes the book will have a similar effect on the reputation of the Orange Order as The Brotherhood did on the reputation of the masons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Taken totally out of context, 19 Jan 2011
This review is from: Behind Closed Doors - the Hidden Structure Within the Orange Order [the Royal Arch Purple Order] Examined from an Evangelical Perspective (Paperback)
I first read works by this author before being initiated into the Purple Order, only to find that what he had written had been so bias that it could only be catagorised as lies. I believe this author has in no way studied the true religious aspects of any of the orange, purple, or black 'degrees', i myself a christian would not be involved with any of the above orders if what this man said is true. This is not a true reflection of any of the loyal orders. I believe this man would be better off classing this book as fiction and starting on a more popular catagory such as alien abduction. Total rubbish, and a waste of good paper.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts! but it can set us free!, 12 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Behind Closed Doors - the Hidden Structure Within the Orange Order [the Royal Arch Purple Order] Examined from an Evangelical Perspective (Paperback)
What Hinders God Blessing his People!? - Answer - His People!
I have often heard my own minister talk of God's people hindering blessing. Could a Christian involved in the "loyal orders" be guilty of such a charge!? this is a serious claim to make and one that demands carefull investigation to see if it stands.
I come from a family steeped in the orange Black and purple. There is even an Orange Hall built in memory of my Great Grandfather. Many Godly men in leadership within my Church are in one or all of the orders. I respect them and look up to them. If I'm honest, though, as I get older and mature in my faith I have more and more problems with any Christians being in any of these organizations. Even saying this makes me feel afraid for I know how strong a grip these organizations have on my local churches! I have come to the uncomfortable conclusion - and say this with hunility - they have blinded Godly men!
Despite my families connections with the "loyal orders", I feel increasingly uncomfortable with them, there was and still is "something wrong" with the "orange, purple and Black" but I couldn't put my finger on it! This book helped clarify what that (and i choose my words carefully!)dangerous "Something wrong" actually was and is!
If you're a Christian living in Northern Ireland who takes God's word seriously; If you want to see the Church grow and reach out while there's time and if you want to see God honored and blessings flow more freely in our churches!? Then read this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars A not wholly accurate account of Orange practices, 28 Sep 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Behind Closed Doors - the Hidden Structure Within the Orange Order [the Royal Arch Purple Order] Examined from an Evangelical Perspective (Paperback)
This account of Orange practices and rituals goes into them in a rather superficial and not wholly accurate way. As a member of the Orange Order myself, I would have to totally disagree with many of the Conclustions the author has come to. Although he is himself a past member, the book has not been prepared in anything like an objective fashion. Instead he prefers to take sections from Orange ritual toally out of context so to make the Institution look like something which it patently is not. Anyone looking for a real insight into the Orange Institution should go no further than Ruth Dudley Edwards' book. 'The Faithful Trible' which gives a much more balanced view of the Order from a an author who was brought up as a Southern Irish Catholic.
