Back in the 1980's the fourteen regional ITV companies gradually started airing a late night filler, Prisoner: Cell Block H which had been in production in Australia since 1978 and on Aussie screens since 1979. Between late 1984 and late 1989 more and more of the UK were given access to the Wentworth Detention Centre by weekly / twice weekly / thrice weekly screenings on TV. The series has had an enduring legacy and is still admired and loved by fans to this day, 27 years since production ended. The series is also available completely on DVD with 692 episodes available for fans to enjoy at their own pace.
This book has unearthed many previously unseen photos and some anecdote gems from the stars and crew of the production with many of the cast recalling events from over thirty years ago. There are some fantastic parts featuring some of the sadly missed performers such as Gerda Nicolson (Ann Reynolds) and Sheila Florance (Lizzie Birdsworth).
There is an episode guide at the end and chapters are broken down into the Australian season as the episodes were aired in Melbourne and Sydney.
This book is a MUST HAVE for any Prisoner fan. Recommended!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beg buy or STEAL a copy (and risk Solitary!) 3 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
It is well worth the price if you can afford it, and especially if you find a deal. Bursting with interesting facts, interviews and wonderful photos. Nothing like the two previous half-hearted, largely inaccurate books published in 1990. This has been compiled with great affection and diligent research. It really is much more than just a fan book. It is a wonderful insight into the creation of a television drama in late 70s early 80s Australia. Nothing was the same before or since, and how this particular show was created, broadcast and develpoed has been beautifully and lovingly captured in fine detail . A unique slice of television history, and very valuable for that. It is also, on another level, hugely entertaining and informative for any true blue fan of Prisoner Cell Block H - my only criticism might be that I don't recall seeing anything much dedicated to my favourite character, Mrs O'Regan!!!! I'll have to go and have another look! Like others, I couldn't really put it down. I have read pretty much most of it - apart from the useful complete episode synopses which appear as an appendix - (as I am about to re-view the whole series again, after a couple of years abstinence, on my Val Lehman signed DVDs (!) I don't want to remind myself of the storylines!) Now I can go back to the book and take a close look at all the unique and fascinating behind-the-scenes photographs. I cannot explain why this campy old series so grips and entertains me, but it does and I love it! Therefore, as a fully paid-up Prisoner anorak, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Five big, fat shining stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough, insightful companion to the series. 24 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is the ultimate Prisoner guide: a thorough, insightful, companion to the series packed with rare black and white photos, new interviews with cast and crew and a guide through each year of production and beyond. Well worth investing in and unlikely to be bettered. Also contains short episode summaries for the entire series and character profiles for many main and guest characters.
