Product Description

Product Description

Michael is young, too well off to have to bother to work and bored. He divides his time between hanging around in the local pub drinking too much and talking high-minded nonsense with his devious friend Julian and having arguments with his girlfriend Sophie, frequently in the same evening. One night Julian gives him a capsule marked "TAP 100" - Total Accuracy of Perception, he claims. Unable to resist, Michael takes it the following day and experiences a moment of true perspective on the Universe, that it is all just countless spinning shapes with their own interplay that he is barely involved in. Interesting but hardly life-changing, he decides when it is over. Rapidly Michael realises that there is more to TAP 100 than he first thought, his TV starts talking to him and seems to know more than him about what's going on. People are coming after him, serious people with guns that can come back from the dead. Michael is forced to take a stand against them, caught between the world outside and the world he's creating in his mind. After all, it can't all be real, can it? This blackly comic of the individual's perception is the first novel by Ed Bemand. He was born and raised in Guildford and now lives in Cardiff, where he is currently enjoying the last moments of creative unemployment before deciding whether to go back into financial sales or IT to pay off his debts. Only time will tell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behold a truly novel, novel., 21 Aug 2006

This review is from: Beheld (Paperback)
Beheld by Ed Bemand

Beheld is a wickedly funny, contemporary tale that has you gripped from the outset. The storyline is intricate yet easy to follow and leads you along paths that other novels fear to tread. Beheld successfully guides you into another world that both stuns and bemuses but above all makes you laugh and smile, particularly at the absurdity of modern life as we know it.

The story transports you from the mundane norms of society life into the realms of fantasy, or perhaps scarier than that, the realms of alternate reality. Embedded within its wittiness the novel also contains some surprisingly profound rhetoric that dillies and dallies with age old questions such as, 'Why are we here?' and, 'Does it matter?'

I can think of no reason why Beheld should not be recommended to everyone and anyone. As a debut novel this is a real treat, startlingly unique and truly a great read.

I sincerely hope that everyone who has the chance to partake of this novel enjoys is as unconditionally and thoroughly as I did.
