I had always been interested in socio-linguistics, but this book was my first experience of sociology proper. I have read a lot since then and it is still the best experience. Nearly every page is entertaining to read, which is also due to the many vivid examples Goffman gives, and certainly all of it is interesting - qualities which only very few books of science that I have read have shown. With a particular interest in linguistics I of course especially enjoyed Goffman's remarks on conversational interaction. The book makes you look at and listen to the people around you from a completely new perspective - for some time after I had read it I caught myself walking along the street or riding the subway and involuntarily comparing what I saw to Goffman's analyses, finding them to be very much to the point.
I do not give this book the highest rating because Goffmans terminology is often confusing and contradictory, and his reasoning is less structured than you would expect if you are used to scientific writing. However, this is in great part a result of Goffman's unusual, direct approach to the study of public interaction, which eventually makes the book so captivating and readable from cover to cover.

I bought this book because I am an architect eager to know more about human interaction.
The book title was very appealing and I was expecting to read about the social organization of gatherings in public places, namely squares, theaters, libraries, schools, streets, etc.. Unfortunately the author merely speaks in a super theoretical level, always evoking either the mental hospital (where he finds the "true" behaviour) or etiquette books (dating from the 20's-50's).

I was really disappointed with this book.

Genius in the analysis of people in places 15 Feb 2000
By W. Sanders - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Very few books in sociology so clearly and profoundly conceptualize the concepts of social occasions as do the works of Erving Goffman. This book is especially important for it provides a framework for tricking out the seen but unnoticed behaviors of everyday life. The book's profoundity is not in what stands out in human intercourse, but rather what does not. The mundane world of social interaction is revealed in what most readers will find to be commonsensically true. In the same way that a physicist can tell us why a baseball flies over the fence (a fairly mundane evernt) in terms of mass, velocity, and drag coefficients, Goffman tells us why the ordinary is able to sustain itself as such.

I can't believe someone gave this 1 star! 27 May 2011

I am actually writing this in response to the review that gave 1 star. Yes this is a sociological text not aimed at children. However this work is actually quite easy to read (for most adults with some familiarity with sociology) and definitely has made a significant contribution to the field, particularly within symbolic interactionism. It is also far more accessible than many other key sociological texts (Foucault for example can be somewhat difficult to understand at first). I would highly recommend this to anyone seeking to improve their sociological knowledge especially as symbolic interactionism has had quite a significant impact in the field.

I'm shocked that someone gave this book a one-star rating 17 Dec 2010

So, I'll neutralize somewhat this unfortunate evaluation by giving Goffman's masterpiece a five-star rating. And, being a kid is no excuse!
