Review

...both honest and representative of current thinking on the origins and importance of canine ethology. (Claire L. Corridan Anthrozoös )

Adam Miklosi's new book...will be a landmark contribution to the study of animal behaviour, evolution and cognition. (Current Biology )

Adam Miklosi provides one of the first entirely research-based dog behaviour texts: a great achievement and most certainly a timely addition to the literature...Dog Behaviour, Evolution and Cognition is a very scholarly work, and an ideal starting point for any new researcher in the field of dog behaviour....The book's organization breaks convention and challenges the construct of dog behaviour that I, and no doubt others, have long accepted...this book represents an important step in the field of science-led dog research, and is a highly recommended addition to the bookshelf of any scholar of dog behaviour, domestication or animal cognition. (Nicola Rooney, Animal Behaviour )

This book is distinct in its approach to canine behaviour from a convergent evolutionary viewpoint, thus it is not directly comparable to any other book on canine behavior and fills a unique need in the field of bahavioral science. (Doody's Notes )

This new book is a testament to the bright future of research on dogs (Current Biology )

Miklosi's new book will be a central fixture in all future work on dogs, as it will be the first place that students and experts alike will go to review unfamiliar topics or search for new research ideas (Current Biology )

The 'must-reads' at the end of each chapter are a valuable guide to the literature, should the reader want to learn more. What makes this book especially valuable is that Miklosi reviews not only the very recent, but also the less recent literature. (Trends in Cognitive Science )

Product Description

This is the first book to collate and synthesize the recent burgeoning primary research literature on dog behaviour, evolution, and cognition. The author presents a new ecological approach to the understanding of dog behaviour, demonstrating how dogs can be the subject of rigorous and productive scientific study without the need to confine them to a laboratory environment. Dog Behaviour, Evolution and Cognition starts with an overview of the conceptual and methodological issues associated with the study of the dog, followed by a brief description of their role in human society-almost a third of human families share their daily life with the dog! An evolutionary perspective is then introduced with a summary of current research into the process of domestication. The central part of the book is devoted to issues relating to the cognitive aspects of behaviour which have received particular attention in recent years from both psychologists and ethologists. The book's final chapters introduce the reader to many novel approaches to dog behaviour, set in the context of behavioural development and genetics. Directions for future research are highlighted throughout the text which also incorporates links to human and primate research by drawing on homologies and analogies in both evolution and behaviour. The book will therefore be of relevance and use to anyone with an interest in behavioural ecology including graduate students of animal behaviour and cognition, as well as a more general audience of dog enthusiasts, biologists, psychologists and sociologists.

By emma who reads a lot TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This book is a wonderful, up-to-date synthesis, bringing together almost all the newest scientific research on dogs. It covers new theories and experiments on their behaviour in detail (that is the specialism of the authors, who have worked mainly on trying to observe dog behaviour in their natural surroundings rather than in the lab). But then it goes onto to cover cognition and then evolution, also in good, well-balanced detail.

It is written for a general scientifically-minded reader, so you don't need to worry that it will be too inaccessible. I particularly enjoyed the evolutionary sections as that's my special field of interest, but the entire book was full of intriguing references. There are some quite 'popularising' sections where particular experiments will be covered in detail with photos, but the main text is substantial enough that this will hopefully not be too annoying to more specialist readers.

Well worth having if you are at all interested in the scientific study of dogs, for example if you've enjoyed the books of Stanley Coren.

If you're studying dog behaviour, this book might just become your best friend! No matter what element of dog behaviour you want to understand, it's in here. The amount of information packed into the book is quite amazing, it must have been some labour of love to collate so much information, analyses, previous research, as well as the author's own work on cognition in dogs into one volume. I don't know of any other book quite like it!
So, whether you're a student of dog behaviour, a practising dog behaviourist, or are just really into wondering what dogs are all about, this book must be added to your collection.

a treasure chest 16 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a treasure chest of information, and is very helpful for anyone studying dog behaviour. It's a great antidote to simplistic ethology like Fogle's The Dog's Mind, but it's more than that. Because Miklosi summarises serious research in this field, he can save you a lot of time by bringing it all together for you, giving you an idea of what has been studied up to now. Yes, you need to put some effort into reading this book, but it is well worth the investment of time and energy.
