Product Description

Synopsis
Richard Harris was one of the most successful actors of his generation. Though he was hailed for extraordinary early films, such as This Sporting Life, and the native American films, for example 1970's A Man Called Horse, his prodigious appetite for drink (and drugs) ensured that his turbulent life featured as much in the media as did his films. Always driven by a restless intellect, Harris published a novel, wrote poetry and sang his own songs, as well as performing in the hit musical Camelot. His film career was revived with movies as diverse as the chilling Unforgiven, the epic Gladiator, and, of course, his role as the headmaster beloved of children the world over. Professor Albus Dumbledore, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This biography explores his background in Ireland, his public successes and failures his battles with his own demons, and his death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author's Reply, 13 May 2008
By C. Goodwin "Cliff Goodwin" (England) - See all my reviews

I agree this is a badly written - although originally extensively researched - biography that has been edited and presented in a highly confusing way... And I wrote it.

Anyone who decides to read and take a pop at this book should be aware of one or two facts.

Firstly, having been commissioned and commenced research on this book I was placed under extreme pressure by the publishers to complete the manuscript shortly after Harris's death. This haste, in my view, was also responsible for the actor's widow sueing over its contents and demanding numerous changes. After a High Court ruling it was withdrawn and pulped by Virgin Publishing.

If you are lucky enough to own a copy I would quit moaning about its literary merits and prize its value as a collector's item. In America they are selling for anything over $200.00. For a couple of quid I will even sign it for you!

As to my professionalism as a writer, I would ask C. J. Bryan how many books he has published - and where is he every morning when the page is blank?

Cliff Goodwin

2.0 out of 5 stars Plodding and poorly written, 5 Jan 2008
By C. J. Bryan - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Despite contradictions (sometimes from one paragraph to the next) and some odd grammatical and spelling errors, this does come across as fairly well researched. However, Harris was such a colourful character I get the feeling that Goodwin has made an effort to AVOID all that made him that he was. It must have been a huge effort to do that and I not quite sure why anyone writing a biog would try and avoid the subject himself.
e.g. His wife's attempted suicide is dealt with in ONE sentence. Not one paragraph, but one sentence. Was Goodwin unsure as to whether thiswas a biographical point worth developing? Perhaps someone at the publisher could have mentioned it, "Eh Cliff, this bit about his wife trying to kill herself, maybe you could write a bit more, yeah? Like what impact it had on him'
E.g. Harris' first TV appearance gave him his first big break, but no word on the performance or why it was so strong. No analysis whatsoever for most of Harris' key performances in fact.
E.g. Much of the Harris earlier image was constructed by studio execs and eager newspaperman. No word on the extent to which Harris was part of constructing his own iconography.
E.g Harris' had a turbulent private life. No word on why this may have been the case other than the occasional sentence which reads 'Harris chasing imaginary demons, again'. Well we know that Cliff, but WHY?. One sentence actually says, "His wife taking yet another beating..." when I couldn't find an earlier mention. Are we just expected to know Harris beat his wife regularly, if so why? to what extent?

In fact the book contains virtually no analysis of Harris. Which is an astounding feat in a book which is meant to be a biography. A trudging and turgid experience.

I sense no fire or passion for his subject, Goodwin is a mediocre writer who seems to want to bring others down to his own level.
