5.0 out of 5 stars First buy this... 17 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
...and then buy Fillmore East. Forget about Jessica and all that middle of the road country stuff that Dickie Betts had the band doing after Duane Allman and Berry Oakley died. This is a very different band, playing some of the most soulful, grinding, uplifting, jazzy, latin-tinged, funky blues you will ever hear. Beginnings is a fine introduction to their attitude and their songs, but the Allmans were one of those rare acts who really must be heard live to appreciate where they were coming from. They burnt fast and bright, produced two great studio albums and one earth-shattering live album, then exploded in a tragic mess of bike crashes and drug addiction. In a way, the perfect band, the perfect rock n roll story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have 28 Jun 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is basically the bands first 2 albums (The Allman Brothers Band and Idlewild South) packaged together and for that reason alone represents excellent value.

The songs are all gems delivered with the energy and enthusiasm of a young band just about to become genuine stars. Great playing by all but the dualing guitars of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts stand out as does the unique vocal of Gregg Allman.

This is classic and a real must have in my book.

An excellent electric blues set, combining the forst two albums of a group who would be come legends of the genre. And from this start, it's easy to see why!

Early on the band combined excellent song writing with amazing musicianship to bring about a sound that must have been quite unique at the time.

This record is a must for all fans of good rocking blues. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Bargain 18 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
On this CD you get the Allman Brother's first two albums, "The Allman Brothers Band" & "Idlewild South" together with some reasonable liner notes.
Capricorn Records got back control of the band's early work in 1998 and have done a superb job with the digital re-mastering & packaging.
I like all 14 tracks though "whipping Post" & "Midnight Rider" stand out.
Duane Allman died tragically in a motorcycle accident exactly 30 years ago aged only 24.
Treat yourself to this bargain CD & boogie with Duane & The Brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ALBUMS ON 1 CD 15 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a top value collection which brings the first two Allman Bros albums together on one disc. Both albums are superb, especially the latter which contains the glorious 'Midnight Rider'. It is fair to say that both albums featured here are solid and there is no filler. The musicianship is exemplary and Greg Allman's vocals highly likeable. This is a good introduction to the band and southern country rock - alternatively try the 'Legendary Hits' compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST TWO ALBUMS ON ONE DISC!!! 16 Mar 2013
By Warren
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
WOW!! What can I say. The Allmans 2 best albums on one disc. If I had the choice of taking only 5 cd's to a desert island then "Beginnings" would be in it. The Allmans are one of the most unique , talented & raw bands that has ever graced the musical scene. The first album on offer is their debut "The Allman Brothers Band" which in my opinion is their greatest by some way. Mainly influenced by blues & rock , the power on this record is nothing short of amazing. It never sold well at the time but maybe it was ahead of it's time and is now considered a classic. The second album on the cd is "Idlewild South" which offers something different. A much softer sound with a bit of a jazz vibe which suggests that Dickie Betts had a big hand in this one. "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" is just a dream. I would say there is not better band to blast out on a sunny morning than the Allman Brothers , pure class!!! Had Duane lived then god only knows what heights they could have reached.
