This is the first proper SPD2010 book and I'm pleased to say it's been worth the wait. I knew of a couple of the authors from other blogs, tutorials and the like from working with Sharepoint 2010 from the past couple of months. Its great to finally have a book out to help the non .NET developers amongst us.

This book covers the 'no-code' type stuff that non-programmers will need in order to be able to actually do stuff with SPD2010 such as customize page layouts, UI elements and work and manipulate with webparts (including the data view web part). It does assume general web knowledge of course - HTML, CSS, Sharepoint generally, and a smattering of Javascript. But it doesn't assume you know how to write or understand XLM, CAML or XSLT which are Sharepoint's main front-end languages.

In short this book is ideal for those non-programmers actually administering and creating Sharepoint sites and content in organisations. I'd say an essential purchase for the Sharepoint power-end (but not for the technical developer so much).

Purchased Wrox "Beginning Sharepoint Designer 2010"

There are a few errors in the book especially Chapter 6 which relies on step-by-step instructions to be correct for each additional step to work

Just wasted a morning on this Chapter as it doesn't work - im not going to waste any time pointing out the problems

Im completely sick of buying `coding/admin' type books that are incorrect - the whole point in buying the book is so that you learn the correct techniques to employ to have a website that works `correctly'

How is this possible if the information in your books are incorrect?

Its common in a lot of programming/admin book, so this book is not alone.

If I program a website with incorrect code it doesn't work - if I then continue to program incorrect code I get the sack

Does anyone actually check the step-by-step processes in these books before wrox publishes them?

Anyway - my complaints will go on deaf ears - but ive lost count of the number of errors in books over the years, and im sick of being redirected to websites that contain the error corrections

If i buy a electronic device and it doesnt work i take it back to the shop and they give me a new one that works correctly - it should be the same with books - just make them work!!!!

Dont buy this book - spend your money elsewhere

*THE* SharePoint Designer 2010 Resource 12 Dec 2010
By Andrew Connell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the definitive reference & instructional book for SharePoint Designer 2010 (SPD2010). SPD2010 is a much more flexible and valuable tool not just to power users but for developers as well with the latest release. One of the biggest advantages this book has is that it is authored in a big part by Asif Rehmani, the best SharePoint Designer expert in the industry. I really like the workflow chapter and how this book covers the new XSLT List View Web Part & Data View Web Part customization.

Unbelievable! 14 Aug 2011

STOP! The book is not all bad but I am sharing only my frustrations at this moment. I stopped working (prepping for a class) because I was compelled to write this review.

Do not buy this book if you want to learn by doing. Although there are many good examples, this book is a lesson in frustration because it is full of errors and missed steps in those examlpes. I am disappointed because I needed this book to prep for a training class for which I was delivering. I hope they publish a second edition soon as this effort does not reflect well on the authors' credibility. I bought this book based on my exposure to Asif Rehmanias' web site. I have been a subscriber to his site for a while. I actually bought the SharePoint Designer 2007 book along with this one, and I was disappointed with them both. Please as compensation, provide an electronic version of all examples, working and error free.

MUST READ 10 Nov 2010
By David Mc - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
SharePoint Designer has become a must have for many aspects of creating solutions in SharePoint. The application, through this book helps the 'every-person' get through with confidence the many challenges and road blocks that SharePoint 2010 puts in place. It really is that MUST READ book for working in SharePoint 2010. The book helps guide you with terrific tutorials, and illustrations through to a successful completed task or solution, and I think that's what it is all about.

Being new to SharePoint 2010 and not having worked with SharePoint 2007 I can say that the Wrox series and approach of 'Beginner, and Professional' has been a real blessing.
