5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction to Python! 21 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a great introduction to Python. People who can already program will find the book moves quickly enough, but beginners will by no means be lost.
The book covers everything Python - including an introduction to some more advanced concepts like Django.
At the end of the book, there are several fantastic projects which tech you to make something very cool - like a forum, a chat client (like MSN) and a file sharing server like Bit-torrent.

A great book that I highly recommend!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very demanding for a beginner's guide 7 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Basically what the previous reviewer, Mr. Singer, says: This book is very discriminating vis-a-vis its 'beginning' audience. Lots of good and well-written chapters but the author plainly fails to grasp that some of these concepts are very difficult, and that he needs to slow it down a bit.

The book is marred by a painful lack of judgment about what needs attention and how much and at what stage. Important and difficult bits are not properly spelled out - as they should be in a book that says _beginning_ on the cover, unimportant (at this stage) and hugely difficult subjects are discussed at incomprehensible length (after which is appended an acknowledgement that you're unlikely to come across this kind of thing as it's not in much use - but hey, maybe you yourself can figure out something it's good for?). It occasionally feels like it's written by the kind of professor who, following his own train of thought, can go on and on oblivious to the fact that he lost all his students hours ago.

It is not all bad, though but even if it's just a few cases of 'staring at the page in blank incomprehension' it's been enough to make me take long breaks between chapters and go find material on the internet to supplant that of entire chapters. Not very satisfactory.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too brief for novices 11 Feb 2011
By asdfgh
Format:Paperback
Covers too much ground, too briefly to be a helpful tutorial for a beginner.

Web resources such as Google's Python class do this much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and a great companion 8 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book having completed Dive Into Python by Mark Pilgrim (also on Apress).

The two books complement each other perfectly; where Mark Pilgrim's book throws you straight into development, Magnus' book really takes the time to explain the inner workings of Python -- in fact, I'm currently using it as my reference book of choice.

The book also includes some nice chapters on best practices in Python and has certainly helped me understand the concept of "pythonic" coding.

This book is a good starting point for anyone wanting to learn Python -- and, along with Dive Into Python, will give you a firm grounding in the language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Programming Book I own 13 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a very good book to get if you are new to python and programming.

The book introduces all the concepets of programming wiht python in an easy to read manner.

The really great thing about this book is the chapters that covered creating several different programmes. The programes are simple enough to fit in the book with out pages and pages of source code, and they are far more complex than the usual programmes you find in programming books. This makes it a great asset to people just trying to figure out how to put the basics together into a functional programmes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Python For Beginners 10 Aug 2009
By Anthoni
Format:Paperback
This book was and is perfect. Having come from a Delphi background I knew very little about Python. I had seen a few online tutorials but could get to grips with them. One in particular was the lambda function and how to use it, let alone list expressions.

However, I can use both and have a firmer grasp of the python fundamentals. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is beginning Python.
