Format: Paperback
For self-teaching Old English, this book leads into translating passages without a wall of grammatical explanation first and is an encouraging and interesting start with easy passages. However, I left a star off the review because there is no general glossary and the readings have only select word lists near the readings.
The authors have given advice on how to learn the language, by keeping words lists by topics or gramamtical forms. Perhaps that's why they haven't provided their own! They also say that it isn't necessary to understand every word, but I found that frustrating. I resorted to using my Sweet's as a dictionary to work out some of the translations.
This book is good for a taste of understanding OE language and literature. But if you are more serious and want to learn it thoroughly, you might prefer Pollington's First Steps in Old English or the TY course.

Good Introduction 14 Aug. 2013
By Vince Cabrera - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I'm not familiar with other Old English texts, so I can't say if there's others out there that are better. But this is quite an easy read that gets you learning words and translating sentences very quickly and easily. Definitely worth a look.

beginning old english 4 Feb. 2009
By Park Young Bae - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This basic introduction to old english(NOT Old English!)is an excellent
guide for students in Korea and Japan who want to have a quick look at
the overall review of old english language and literature as a subsidiary
text in their old english classes. Very practical and explicit explana-
tions on the selected old english language and literature. Highly recommendable for scholars whose major is NOT old english.
