"Beginning Game Level Design" is aimed at readers who want to learn about the creation of game environments and the control of game play, known in the game development industry as level design . It presents an overview of the skills required to produce high quality levels and teaches readers the basic uses of several genre-specific tools along the way. It focuses on key topics, including design aesthetics, familiarization with the basic tools used in level design, what makes good levels and how to create them, and explains how readers can transfer these new skills into a job as a level designer. The author takes a step-by-step tutorial approach to teaching the level design techniques genre-by-genre. Offering readers a unique value, this book covers the basics of level design without focusing strongly on one single software platform or product.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay book 17 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
Bought this book as it was cheap and wanted a fairly general introduction to level design.

The book is essentially a discussion of things to consider when creating levels using a game engine such as CryEngine or the Unreal engine. A little outdated now as it refers to engines available in 2005. Still the information supplied is applicable to any of todays game engines.

The author is very funny and I enjoyed reading the book. The book is however a little short and would benefit from a more structured approach to the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! Good for aspiring devs and everyone else. 6 Oct 2006

Format:Paperback
This book does an excellent job of teaching you all the different elements in game design. It also includes some of the tricks pro developers use as well! A nice bonus. The book is written in "simple to follow" English so as to not discourage anyone from following the lessons. I highly recommend this to all the gamers out there that want to get into game or level design!
5.0 out of 5 stars Every page is full of precious information 8 Jan 2007
By Paulo M. F. Andrade - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is the 3rd book I got about the subject and I can say that this one in my favourite. Is short but covers everything very well. Also, the authors really show a lot of experience and very good writing skills. A really hope they write and intermediate book covering more stuff and using a RPG Toolkit like NWN2 one. You can't go wrong with this book. GRAB IT !

3.0 out of 5 stars Lacking and out of date 25 Dec 2012
By Shea T. Harvey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was a little disappointed with this one. Glad I bought it used for next to nothing. Very basic information, that imo, anyone should know already if they are interested in game design and have played video games even rarely. Perhaps an adequete starting point if you know nothing about games ans have never touched a video games before. Also the information is very out of date. Games are technology driven and this is using Unreal 2... Unreal 3 has been out for several years now and the industry is moving into Unreal 4 as I write this so... I encourage an update and redesign to bring this book up to snuff.
