Good for begininers 18 Aug 2009

This is a ideal book for someone starting Java Enterprise Edition (JEE), but also useful for those who want a brief overview of the ne features. It focuses on the changes in version 6 with examples in Glassfish. It also mentioned some of the significant changes in 5 and gives a good high level overview of the JEE platform in general. It also explains things like JPA, ORM and Rest.

I'd recommend it to someone who's new(ish) to java and whats to see what JEE/J2EE is all about. It's not good as a reference book (but then it's not pretending to be one.)

This book is under 500 pages so don't expect to get the complete rundown on
every aspect of Jave EE, but it's a very good starting point.

Despite having two 900 page heavyweight JSF books on my shelf I didn't know
about the jstl/xml, jstl/fmt & jstl/functions taglibs until I read this book.
There isn't a lot of info about JSF in this book, so treat this as getting
you started only.

There's a good description of JPA ORM with a concise and clear description
of using inheritance hierarchies in JPA. I use the Pro JPA 2 book for more
detailed information but this book (the one I'm reviewing) tends to be the
first place to go for quick results.

There's reasonably detailed info about things like the timer service and
JAX-RS which are things I expect to use in the future and read about first
in this book.

I've now been developing on Java EE 5/6 for a year and a half and I can say
that if you think you're going to be rolling out transactional enterprise
web applications with complex user interfaces after reading one book then
you're either a lot cleverer than I am or over-optimistic.

But this book has been helpful to me and is a gre at improvement on a
previous Apress attempt to cover this space. The book does what it says on
the tin.

I'm an independent software developer with no connection to the author or
publisher.

Beginner friendly 1 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
I've been working with Java SE for couple of years now and I thought that it would be a good idea to maybe just to have a bit of taste what Java EE is.

This was one of the first books I saw and I am very happy with it. I like the structure. You read couple of chapters and then you get "Putting it all together" chapter. I wish there were more of those though. I would of liked more code examples about Authentication and Authorisation sections. They were only described and that's all.

I went through the book in a week and a half at work whilst building the examples.

Overall, very happy with the book, as it says it's great for beginners, but I would not called myself as a professional after reading it.
