Web development using JSP, JSF and the various periferal technologies is both vast and complex. This book packs a lot of information into a tight volume and achieves a nice balance between technical implementation and general concepts. I regard this as one of the better technical books I have read and it has gone a long way to bringing together, all the pieces of the puzzle into a single volume.

I started this book with almost zero knowledge of HTML/Java script/JSP/Tomcat. By installing Tomcat & Eclipse to my Debian linux laptop (all FREE downloadable software) and then working through this book I've learnt to develop dynamic web sites.
(p.s. O'Reilly "Tomcat The Definitive Guide" book helped get Tomcat installed and working)

This book gives you a thorough introduction to database driven web application development with JSP and JSF for the Tomcat web server, which is what I needed as I was really approaching the coding part of it as a novice.

Also, the bookshop examples are practical and easy to follow.
They start off with JSP and then become more complex, as you are introduced to
databases (open source MySQL), SQL, XML and finally JSF. Other topics needed for dynamic web development such as HTML and CSS are also well covered.

There aren't many shortcomings for an introductory book, however I feel
that more modern database access techniques such as Hibernate ORM would
have been a nice addition, therefore 4 stars.
