About the Author
Joseph Faisal Nusairat is a software developer who has been working full time in the Columbus, Ohio, area since 1998, primarily focused on Java development. His career has taken him into a variety of Fortune 500 industries, including military applications, data centers, banking, internet security, pharmaceuticals, and insurance. Throughout this experience, he has worked on all varieties of application development, from design and architecture to development. Joseph, like most Java developers, is particularly fond of open source projects and tries to use as much open source software as possible when working with clients. Joseph is a graduate of Ohio University with dual degrees in computer science and microbiology and a minor in chemistry. While at Ohio University, Joseph also dabbled in student politics and was a research assistant in the virology labs. Currently, Joseph works as a senior partner at Integrallis Software (http://www.integrallis.com). In his off-hours, he enjoys watching bodybuilding competitions and Broadway musicals, specifically anything with Lauren Molina.

Great Introduction to Seam as well as EJB3/JSF

This book does a great job of introducing the reader to the relevant pieces of EJB3 and JSF that Seam builds upon, and then goes through the various ways you can use Seam. The examples are thorough yet built up slowly; he doesn't skip any steps which is often the case with books on frameworks. I read the book cover to cover and was off and running with Seam, and still from time to time look back on it for details on a specific topic.
It focuses on the core Seam benefits like the annotation framework and persistence contexts, but also covers more advanced topics like Security, AJAX and Rules integration.
Highly recommended...

Low quality writing

I have to admit that I do not write reviews, but this book compelled me to do so. I have read a fair share of computer books in the last fifteen or so years, I'd have to say that this book is one of the worst. Luckily for me, I was familiar with most of the concepts described in it, otherwise, I would be quite lost. This book is on Seam, but the first 100 or so pages are on other technologies. This might be good for some, but I expected to get a Seam book. The number of errors, typos and omissions in this book are innumerable. English is horrible too (has an editor actually read it?). Good percentage of sentences start with "So....". Code examples sometimes list imported classes, and sometimes don't. This makes it very hard to understand where these classes/interfaces/annotations come from. The book is full of statements without a logical path to them. The title says: "From Novice to Professional". Well, this is a bold statement and the the book does not hold up to it. I certainly would not recommend it to a novice, as Seam concepts are not explained well, and would not recommend it to a professional, because it just does not provide answers and does not go deep enough for those trying to dig the Seam. The explanation of a SLSB life cycle and other EJB3 concepts are unintelligible. The only positive thing about this book was time on the market, but as I have read the Michael Yuan's "JBoss Seam" book, online documentation and EJB 3 specification, I'd say that this book was completely useless for me.

Taught me a great deal

I learned a great deal from this book. I read it cover to cover. I'll save it for reference and configuration issues.
The first part of the book reviewed JSF and EJB3 and established their relationship to Seam. Since I'm new to those technologies, that really helped me too.
The book is easy to read and was very well written and edited. Congratulations to the author and to the editors.
