This is a very good book for beginners at CSS. It covers each topic very thoroughly, with examples and exercises throughout, so I don't think you could possibly go away without understanding the topics covered.

It doesn't cover much fancy stuff such as colouring the browser scrollbars or from input fields etc but it does give a good grounding in how CSS works and the concepts, including a thorough coverage of liquid design, the CSS box model, buoyancy etc which are all absolute core concepts if you want to create a professional-looking website (without using messy/hard-to-maintain (and sooo yesterday!) tables for layout). Once you know the above the fancy stuff is just a question of picking up from a website which CSS properties to use.

Also if you can't be bothered to type out all the code for the examples and exercises, you can download it in one go from the publisher's website. As the book contains a lot of code, this saves lots of time.

I've docked off a star only because at times the thoroughness can get a little much (at least for me), to the point of plodding. There is a fair amount of recapitulation through explanations and examples and he seems sometimes to assume no common sense. For example instead of saying "property Y can be applied in the same way as property X" he may insist on going into detail again on property Y. Also it can get tedious going through every single change made to some of the examples especially if there are many small changes and you've already grasped from the previous explanation what properties X,Y and Z do. If you really don't like plodding, you might not like this book. That said I would rather a book that is plodding and makes sure I understand it than one which races through leaving me unsure about things, and I recognise that some of the thoroughness and detail may be useful when I come across a problem, especially with my CSS box model layout, and need to go back to a thorough explanation.

This review by the way is for the non-colour edition; an up-to-date colour edition is now out.

This book may be OK if you really want to do the whole tutorial. But if you want learn by reading, every example will be hidden in a full website code, you lose plenty of time to find out where is the change.
It also follows the traditional structure: "let us see everything about fonts size, including all options and technical tips which you are most likely never to use, and after reading 50 pages then we move on to the tables".
I must prefer the structure: "let us quickly introduce to everything, build something practical, and after we see how to fine-tune it". That is my preference.
I find the style a bit confusing, as an example for the selectors: I was totally lost, while reading 3 pages of Robin Nixon Starter Guide taught me everything, just a few lines of code, and logical.
Finally, there are many pages about "technical tips" on obsolete browsers: up to you to decide whether you want to allocate much time and coding to the viewers who still use IE6, but I do not consider them as my targeted audience.

Wonderful 26 July 2007
By Todd Hawley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've read several books about CSS over the last three or four years, but this book has to be the most complete I've seen. Not only does Mr. York obviously know this material quite extensively, he does it in a way that makes total sense. And this book is not just for beginning web developers either, there's quite a bit of information that more experienced developers can learn about. I also liked the various code examples in color. It helps to make the specific code stand out much more when it's in a different color than the code around it. This of course helps the reader to understand and remember it more effectively.

The author also takes time to talk about the differences in browsers and how each one presents the code. There are few things more aggravating to a web developer than having to deal with the various quirks of each browser. What looks great in IE may not look so hot in Firefox or Safari. And vice versa. The author cites various examples of this throughout the book, as well as "workarounds" for each "issue."

Another thing that makes this book so enjoyable is how the author goes through step by step instructions on how to achieve a particular style. This is one way to show how styles affect presentation.

It's amazing how powerful CSS has become over the last few years. There's a lot you can do with styles and Mr York has shown all web developers ways we can take advantage of this power.

Everything I was looking for in just one book 18 May 2008
By Patricia G. Conley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
When searching for a technical manual, I usually am able to narrow the field down to just 2 or 3 that together will cover my needs.

I sat down with a stack of about 15 books on CSS, including the most popular listed on Amazon, and started thumbing through them to evaluate their content, organization, reference material, indexing, etc. I eliminated several books, and had a tall stack of possible books to one side when I opened this book. I was first struck by the simple beauty of the book layout. The material in this book is presented in an exceptionally pleasing manner, easy to read, and well punctuated with examples and graphics. Code is colorcoded so the reader can easily pick out the portions being described in the text, and followed by color photos of the actual screens resulting from the code.

The book is logically organized and includes the best and most comprehensive reference section of all the books I considered.

The topics are easy to read and clearly presented. There are exercises to do which allow the reader to actually test-drive the techniques described and accompanying code files are available on the website to go along with the book.

I was surprised to find one book that contained everything that I look for in a technical manual. Hurray! I didn't have to buy 2 or 3 books to cover all the bases.

Thank you Richard York.

One of the bests CSS books 18 Mar 2008
By Marcos O. Cabral - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is what it's intend to be: an excellent book for CSS beginners. Good sequence of chapters, good examples, and the wellcome surprise of color sintax and screen pictures.
Congratulations to Wrox, and I expect that other books could be printed with same quality presentation.
