Book Description

3 April 2000 0764543830 978-0764543838 New edition
What is this book about? Access 2000 is an important part of the Office 2000 program suite, and is available on both the Premium and Professional editions of Office 2000. Access has traditionally been the Office suite database program par excellence. It still remains that way, but with Office 2000 the face of Access is changing. This book will look at the traditional role of Access and its future uses in the Office suite. Using VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), the user can program his or her own programs in what is essentially a subset of the Visual Basic programming languages. This is tremendously powerful, as it allows you to create great User Interfaces (forms etc), as a front end to actual database storage and manipulation. This continues to be one of the great strengths of programming Access VBA. This book updates, expands and improves Beginning Access 97 VBA Programming, in an Office 2000 setting. All the great tutorial content, teaching people how to program with VBA in Access is there, but now majorly rewritten to take account of Office 2000. Updated to take account of the Office 2000 facilities Constructs a substantial example application with VBA Database theory taught in the Wrox Beginning style What does this book cover? In this book, you will learn how to Construct a substantial example application with VBA Master the foundations of Visual Basic for Applications Understand the concepts behind classes and objects Understand how Automation can be used to link Office applications Create custom objects using the Class Module feature Debug your programs and implement robust error handling Add support for multiple users Publish your Access database on the Internet Optimize and add polish to your finished database application Who is this book for? This book is for users who already have a basic knowledge of databases and the basic Access objects, such as tables, queries, forms and reports. You now want to expand on your existing knowledge of Access and wish to learn how to program in VBA. You don′t need any prior programming experience, although a basic knowledge of Access macros would be helpful.

Product Description

From the Back Cover

Access 2000 is the fifth version of the hugely successful desktop database from Microsoft. When it was first released in 1992, Access immediately gained praise for its ease of use and power. Each release of Access has added features and increased usability, and with Access 2000 we now have a unified development environment for the whole of the Office 2000 suite of applications. Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is the programming language that gives Access its real power, allowing you to automate complex tasks and create applications with more scope and flexibility than is possible with its default forms and macros. VBA has a simple syntax allowing even complete novices to learn programming with very little effort, and this book illustrates the concepts with plenty of examples and exercises. Who is this book for? This book is for users who already have a basic knowledge of databases and the basic Access objects, such as tables, queries, forms and reports. You now want to expand on your existing knowledge of Access and wish to learn how to program in VBA. You don’t need any prior programming experience, although a basic knowledge of Access macros would be helpful. What does this book cover? Constructing a substantial example application with VBA Mastering the foundations of Visual Basic for Applications Understanding the concepts behind classes and objects How Automation can be used to link Office applications Creating custom objects using the Class Module feature How to debug your programs and implement robust error handling Adding support for multiple users Publishing your Access database on the Internet How to optimize and add polish to your finished database application

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed 10 Aug 2002
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A short but sweet review. I love this book! I'm only half way through at the moment, but what I've learnt so far (particulary about OOP and, specifically, Access objects) has made my understanding of VBA complete. The light hearted style makes for very easy reading, though sometimes you do wish the authors would come to the point. Thanks entirely to this book, my confidence with VBA is growing by the day, and I hope soon to be able to apply it at work, rather than relying on macros.

Having done several courses in programming (one costing thousands and another a couple of hundred pounds) I'd definately advise anyone to save their dosh, and buy this instead! It's the best £30 I've ever spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb 16 Sep 2003
Format:Paperback
Fantastic book. Covers material in depth but in an easy to follow style. The authors communicate the ideas and principles in a clear and concise manner that logically develops the reader's understanding of VBA. Aimed at those who already have a good grounding in access and are used to dealing with forms, queries, tables etc. but have no VB or VBA experience. If you fall into this category and want to know more you won't be dissapointed with this book.

Not A very long review, but this book was great.
It covered nearly all areas of VBA in Access and was very useful for my IT coursework.
If you want to learn VBA in simple steps then this book is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the beginner in VBA 5 July 2001
Format:Paperback
This book was a great help to me, in that on the strength of what I learned in it (together with a 3 month VB course) I was able to get my first programming job. A bit lacking in depth maybe for some, but the title does say "beginning..". If you work through the code in areas you don't understand it really does help you to see how things work. The light jokey writing style also makes this book a bit less dry than some and therefore easier not to fall asleep, although these guys obviously really know their stuff. Only uses DAO however, so maybe getting a bit dated now. Maybe the next version will be updated (the authors mention ADO, but dismiss it as not rich enough at the time of writing). In short, a good book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, but a bit too gentle at times. 12 Aug 2001
Format:Paperback
I started working as a database developer in January, and "Beginning Access 2000 VBA" was the first book that I read on the subject. There was much in it that I liked, particularly the code showing users currently connected, and the error logging table (both of which have been added to our company databases). I understood everything without any problems, and that perhaps, is my criticism -- perhaps it could have shot a little higher at times? Take for instance, Chapter 16 which shows how to gauge user permissions via bitwise AND operations; the authors state that it's not important to understand how these work, but it would only have taken a second to explain it anyway. When difficult concepts were introduced, they seem to be in an uneven fashion. Chapter 2 contains an interesting discussion of the software development process and principles of normalisation, only to be followed by chapters on the basics of programming. I can't imagine there are too many people who would understand the former and not know the latter. In terms of teaching VBA, I think it is a mistake to try and explain function arguments before you've covered variables, but that's just my opinion...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for starting in VBA 10 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I needed a suitable book for learning Access VBA in a hurry, and came across this one. Found the book to be a bit too basic to begin with, as it does concentrate on users with very little or no programming experience. However, as an experienced VB/VBscript/ADO programmer, what I needed was an introduction to the Access Objects and the interaction between them, and this book gave me exactly that. Having read the book, I am now ready for a more advanced VBA resource. Highly recommend this book if you want to get started in VBA

I am no programmer or Access expert and I love this book. I am only on Chapter 4 and I have learnt SO much already! The book includes a CD with practice examples and the reader can 'try it out' as he/she goes along. Very well written and the sense of humour is very much appreciated. My compliments to the authors.
