Product Description

Knowing the Welsh language is the key to understanding the culture and history of Wales. This volume is an ideal starter for travellers wanting to learn the language. The 17 lessons are specially designed to help visitors feel comfortable in the country in a variety of situations with dialogues and vocabulary grounded in the detail of everyday life. The two 80-minute audio CDs feature native speakers who offer a unique means of learning the language as spoken in today's Wales. The book rounds off with discussions on Welsh culture, history and life.

Format: Paperback
I have recently purchased this book (ISBN 978-0-7818-1160-6) and am currently working my way through it.
My copy is the 2008 edition, and comes with 2 audio CDs inside the back cover, and has a different cover to the one shown (castle in daylight on top 2/3 of cover, then title and author on plain light brown background underneath).
It's well written and is very good for anybody who wants a sound introduction to the Welsh language but is not following the currently taught syllabus in Welsh classes (Mynediad, Sylfaen, etc courses) as vocabulary and grammar appears to be taught in a different order to those. It is, however, a very good introduction to the language which if completed will leave you able to hold interesting conversations with people at a level similar to those who have completed the Mynediad course as far as I can tell (bearing in mind that I'm a learner, not a tutor or native speaker!). The CDs are a huge help in achieving this.
The book consists of an introduction to Wales, followed by "Welsh grammar at a glance" and a pronunciation guide. The first of 17 lessons begins on page 31, and the last ends on page 183. After that is a list of useful words and phrases, answers to exercises, a short dictionary, and finally a list of all 96 tracks on the CDs (4 tracks per lesson, usually, plus extras corresponding to the first and last parts of the book.

Beginners Welsh by Heini Gruffudd 5 Feb. 2002
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
Provides a good overview of Welsh including grammatical guides and a brief history of the area. Language courses are very practical and efficiently done... unlike some other language books, you don't have to wade through silly, extraneous dialogues about non-native students learning the language. The dialogues get right to the salient linguistic points. Excellent!

Cd production 4 April 2012
By Filthy Lucre - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I've just received the book and CD set. The CD production is not very good as the speaker is cut off in certain parts to say what is coming next.

New to Welsh 19 April 2010

Just in receipt--without CDs or a classroom experience, Welsh should not be attempted. It will take this summer's efforts for sure.
