5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY SPECIAL book reflecting on that relationship, 6 Mar 2009

which exists between teddies and children, with a surprise at the end!

'Find out everything a teddy bear needs to feel happy and loved.....'

This review is for the ORCHARD BOOKS edition/2008.
Although more expensive than some publications, this is truly an endearing picture book from Gillian Shields, and well worth the investment, in my opinion.
Superbly illustrated throughout, with meaningful facial expressions from Sebastien Braun, as always.
Attractive lightly padded cover in pastel tones opens to 28 thick shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread.

From the back cover, and repeated on the first and penultimate pages:-

'You need a bear
And a bear needs you.
You and a bear
Together make two.'

This repetition immediately promotes that familiar, confident feel and offers the chance of joining in to older listeners.

The rest of the book continues predominantly in rhyme format, to describe what type of bear, the weather a bear likes, the toys a bear likes best, what they like if they feel poorly, the foods they like (apart from honey!), and usefully finishes with bedtime remedies if you just can't get to sleep, including a cuddly toy, a comforter and.......of course....a bedtime story!

AND... just when you think the book is all finished, the listener is reminded of the importance of a hug...and has the opportunity to peep in the 'mirror' on the very last page, with that favourite bear!

Easy-to-follow text, emphasised in places FOR EFFECT and to illustrate opposites, for example - 'BIG' or 'small', depending on the size of the bear, and sunny or rainy, depending on the weather!

Further example of text:-

'Bears love playing,
Bears love toys,
Bears love making
Lots of NOISE!

And this is the page the majority of the children in my classes like the best!
