Product Description

CD Description

Forests, lakes, mountains, fjords, archipelagos, glaciers, waterfalls and the occasional geyser – Scandinavia is a place where nature reigns supreme and the Beginner’s Guide shows how the landscape is the inspiration behind the music’s spacious, organic, and often dramatic qualities. Featuring artists from ‘greater’ Scandinavia – Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands – the Beginner’s Guide to Scandinavia features some of Scandinavia’s best-selling and most influential music acts such as Abba’s Benny Andersson with his Orkester, the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Värttinä and many more. This compilation is divided into three perspectives – Pop & Contemporary, Folk & Roots and Jazz, Experimental & Atmospheres and it is the first time that these genres of Scandinavian music have been combined on one 3CD set.

Scandinavia has always been a land of dreams for me. Not for nothing has Midsummer's Night acquired such a mythical significance for its people. In my youth, I dreamed of living in Sweden, and now I am transported there through this superb compilation. Cornelis Vreeswijk remains my all-time favourite; little wonder that this adopted son of Sweden has become such a cult figure. Other highlights include Benny Andersson of ABBA, Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Ane Brun, Eivor, Gjermund Larsen, and particularly Wimme, whose shamanic joik chantings provide the perfect backdrop to my Nietzsche studies.

This compilation is a real 'must have' for all lovers of Scandinavia. However, I feel it reaches out beyond Scandinavia and would appeal to everyone who enjoys high quality music - be it folk, pop, jazz or experimental. A collection of thoughtfully selected and well sequenced tracks (39 of them!). And all at such an unbelievable price!

I bought this compilation because I was curious. I wasn't expecting it to be this good however. While many compilation albums generally get stuck in one groove, this one steps right out of it. There are 3 CDs - Pop & Contemporary, Folk & Roots and Jazz, Experimental & Atmospheres. Each of them boasts such a variety, and often the styles subtly merge.

One of my favourite pieces is Eivør Pálsdóttir's live version of "Mín Móðir", which is much better than the studio version in my opinion. Truly breathtaking! Other favourites are Kiila, Hedningarna, Annbjørg Lien, Kari Bremnes, Lars Demian, Kimmo Pohjonen, Wimme and Agnar Már Magnússon.

I fully recommend this comp to anyone who wants to check out top quality non-Anglophone music (and some excellent English tracks too!). It also inspired me to investigate numerous artists who sound so enticing but whom I'd never heard of before.

The music on this compilation is alive and organic: it seems like I'm listening in 3D.

A compilation that steps out of the groove 14 Jun 2011

A moment to remember 12 May 2012

I received the Beginner's Guide to Scandinavia as a gift some weeks ago. I've been listening to the CDs, especially "Jazz, Experimental & Atmospheres". My kids like very much track number 11, "High Five" I think is the name. I'd love to know which instrument is on that track, that sounds like a string instrument. I can tell there's a bass, a guitar, but there's something else I cannot tell. There's an Indian feeling about it...

The other night, the kids and I were driving and listening to those tracks, the moon was high and it was a beautiful autumn evening... (we live in the southern hemisphere). We were listening to track 8, and with the kids enjoying the moment in the back seat, my daughter says "I'm crying, mom" ('cause she had got so emotional)... Well, I had tears in my eyes too, but they hadn't noticed since I was not facing them, and because of the darkness. A moment to remember, a very happy one.

Right now I'm listening to that CD.
