Review

The world of machine embroidery is bewildering. Where do you begin? I would personally reach out for Alison Holt's books (see other reviews for all three and the DVD). Why Alison? Not only does she have a thorough grounding of sewing machines and how to use them for painting with thread, but she also has a love and knowledge of flowers and plants that comes through in her exquisite work. Alison's work is quite detailed and she is an enthusiastic teacher. In this book she gives a basic introduction to equipment for machine embroidery including choosing threads and for silk painting. She also discusses design and using photographs, colour and painting a background fabric. This fabulous book encourages the machine embroiderer to experiment with different stitches to achieve the effect they want. There are three complete step-by-step embroideries to complete. This 80-page book is a tremendous beginner's guide to its subject. With lots of practice, you should be able to complete the projects.-KarenPlatt.co.uk When I saw the works of Alison Holt for the first time, I thought these are beautiful landscape photographs. But as I looked more closely, I could hardly believe it that these were actually embroidered pictures. The light and shade are fantastic, the natural colours and the perspective. In her embroideries not only the colors succeed in representing forms and structures, but she also tries to catch the moment where she meets the light. She is a painter on the sewing machine for me.-Patchwork Professional

Product Description

Beginners will enjoy experimenting with thread colours, and the size and direction of the stitches and will have great fun building up a range of exciting effects. Many people at first mistake Alison Holt's embroideries for paintings or even photographs. She is fascinated by gardens, landscapes and detail and enjoys the challenge of interpreting all the elements she sees in nature. Alison's way of working has evolved into a technique of painting with threads on to a canvas of hand-painted silk. She uses two basic stitches - straight stitch in various combinations and zigzag stitch - to make fine and broad brushstrokes on silk, blending both to achieve stunning results. The raised embroidery on the glowing coloured background produces a beautiful three-dimensional effect. This comprehensive and colourful book covers everything from composing a landscape and setting up the machine to choosing threads and silk dyes and framing up. Alison encourages the reader to experiment with the techniques as they go along, making sure the colour, length and direction of stitch are right for the effect they are trying to recreate. Step-by-step demonstrations of an autumn river bank and colourful flower border are included as are many examples of Alison's inspiring and original work.

Anyone who loves landscapes, and gardens will appreciate this book with it's beautiful illustrations on how to achieve these with a sewing machine.
The author covers everything you need to know, from design, (you don't have to be an artist), to stitch, with many ideas and easy to understand instructions, using only two stitch techniques, (straight and zigzag).
I am very impressed by the whole book with its deliciously sumptous pictures. I cant wait to have a go at creating my own.
An excellent book for beginners.

Lovely inspiring book 9 July 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this in the hope of being inspired to start a new hobby of machine embroidery. I have not been disappointed. The book is clear and helpful in describing sewing techniques and the photographs of Miss Holt's work are excellent. The author combines an obvious love of both the natural world and embroidery. Her work may be too literal an observation of what is around her for some tastes but it is nevertheless stunning.

Alison Holt does not let down her readers in any way. The work is broken down into sensible, easy-to-follow steps and the pictures are a delight. I have tried several of the techniques from the book and found them useful - some do need quite a bit of practice to get a good effect but this is true with most skills.
It is a useful, informative 'how to' book as well as being full of inspirational scenes and completed pieces of work. Highly recommended for all aspiring or experienced free-machine embroiderers.
