Product Description

Product Description

In one form or another, Chinese is the language the most spoken in the world. Although it has many spoken forms, they are all written in exactly the same way. This volume teaches Modern Standard Chinese which is understood by more Chinese speakers than any other form of the language. Designed for people who want to learn Chinese but who are daunted by the prospect of complicated grammar, classes and coursebooks, this course starts right from the beginning, explaining everything in simple English. There are hints throughout to make learning easy and you can learn at your own pace with plenty of practice of each new point. It is a friendly introduction to the language which should help you to understand and speak Chinese sufficiently well to function effectively in basic everyday situations, both social and business. The course also offers an insight into Chinese culture and offers the opportunity for you to find out something about the Chinese writing system if you want to. The book is divided into two main parts. Units one to ten introduce you to the basic structures and grammatical points you'll need in everyday situations.Units 12-21 deal with everyday situations such as booking

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to learning chinese, 18 Feb 2004
This review is from: Beginner's Chinese - Book and double CD pack (Mandarin)(Teach Yourself Languages S.) (Audio CD)
This course provides a good beginning to those wishing to learn chinese with no previous foreign language experience. It moves slowly and steadily, explaining every step along the way and helping to build your confidence as you move through the chapters. It covers not only spoken mandarin, but in the later chapters begins to tackle written mandarin and also provides cultural tips throughout the book. The dialogs are comprehensive and helpful, and are taken slowly to prevent you being too overwhelmed.
Problems can be encountered, however, when using this as your sole source of learning - many of the words and phrases are repeated on the tape only once, giving you only one source of reference. This does make it difficult to distinguish the particulars of one specific phrase from the general intonation, something which is imperitive when learning Mandarin (it has 4 different vocal tones, each one changing the meaning of the word if pronounced differently).
The course does provide a perfect introduction to Mandarin, and i would recomend it to anyone wanting to learn if used in conjunction with classes or regular conversational speaking.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Mandarin, 5 Jan 2009

This book was a requirement as part of my Chinese module at university. The book is good, showing good examples of pronunciation and also the chinese words in english writing, however the book lacks the chinese charactors and for that reason I don't think this book is very good.

It would work well for someone just wanting to speak the language, but if you are going there on holiday and need to read signs or write things down etc. this book is not for you!

Overall I think the course is good. I also find it quite enjoyable. One problem I have with it is that there are no translations of the conversations.
