Product Description

If you have tried Tai Chi in the past and found it too difficult, this is the DVD for you. A true beginner level is presented here. A proper progression is best achieved by taking things slowly and thoroughly. This is a great place to start learning Tai Chi at a beginners pace.
Presented here are 3 routines that can be done separately, together or mixed.
The warm up is a classic Tai Chi Routine for getting started. When people talk about the benefits of Tai Chi it s not only about the Tai Chi Routine itself. It is everything together. The warm up will give you a routine that will strengthen, stretch, relax and harmonise the body and mind.
The Qi Gong routine is a more mindful routine. It s designed to help one get in touch with their own personal energy and how that feels. Moving into the right frame of mind really helps get the most out of a Tai Chi Routine.
The Tai Chi Routine is very minimalist. Each movement is presented with a few repetitions to produce a relaxed harmony of body and mind. The routine uses very little space so can easily be performed in a small space. All essential principles of Tai Chi are presented in the Beginner Tai Chi Routine.
Also presented on this DVD is other forms of Tai Chi. This style of Tai Chi is Sun Style. I chose this style because it lends itself to mindfulness and is quite minimal in its movement. The other Tai Chi Routines are for demonstration of flow and skill.
Tai Chi is translated as Grand Ultimate. This means everything contained in the universe. This name was given after Tai Chi was created. So it is a massive compliment to the art. I love it because it is first and foremost a Skill. It is gentle. We are beings that can live into our 90s. I feel it is best to have an exercise program that respects our bodies and our longevity. It is also one of the few skilful physical arts that can be done for life. Any investment in your time will be beneficial for life not a short-lived skill.
Finally I would like to say that Tai Chi is more gentle exercise that is mindful. This DVD is designed to be hands-on. It is slow and calming. The movements are done slowly with control and skill developing many benefits to the body and mind. Due to the gentle nature of the routines, this is also suitable for seniors.
The follow up DVD is the Beginner Tai Chi Level 2( ASIN 095592362X)

5.0 out of 5 stars A DIFFERENT APPROACH 21 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
Having retired from very active jobs my wife and I needed an exercise form appropriate to our age and life style. First we tried to teach ourselves Tai Chi by DVD and then by attending classes. Being left unsatisfied by the first and confused by the second a friend introduced us to Stephen Luff's DVD. It is easy to follow and is just what a beginner needs to be able to practice the exercises and movements at home in between the weekly classes. Having now met and attended a session with Stephen I whole heartedly recommend this DVD to any beginner. The movements and the reasons for those movements are clearly explained. The instructor is filmed in a way that allows the viewer to see the whole of the movement, feet, body and arms. The accompanying commentary is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD 9 Mar 2009
By Pat
Format:DVD
This is a really excellent DVD. Stephen Luff has a calm, clear and sensible approach to Tai Chi and a very pleasant voice - important when you are potentially watching a DVD over and over again. It could be used as a stand alone introduction to Tai Chi but, as he has developed his own version of the Form, might not suit anyone wanting to follow a defined set of moves as part of their night school class etc.
I particularly liked the extras, and the Warming Up the Joints routine is fantastic. Works very gently, head to toe (literally) but in the calmest and easiest way imaginable. I have never before enjoyed a series of exercises to the point where I actually look forward to doing them, especially if I need to loosen tight muscles in the neck and shoulders. Within a few days, they were familiar enough to be able to do without reference to the DVD.
I can't recommend this DVD enough. A friend bought a copy after simply watching the Warming Up routine, and I have just ordered another copy to give to a relative - again mainly for the exercise routine.
I have been loaned three other Tai Chi videos, none of which suited me. This one I bought after reading the reviews on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner Tai Chi (DVD) 1 Mar 2009
Format:DVD
I have a lot of experience of introducing Tai Chi classes to older people and find Stephen's video to be a great introduction for people of any age wanting to learn and experience the first forms of Tai Chi.

This is a good beginner's introduction and Stephen has a
sincere, friendly and encouraging style.

I have no hesitation in recommending Beginner Tai Chi by Stephen Luff as the first step to experiencing the benefits and enjoyment of Tai Chi.

This beginners Tai-Chi DVD is extremely well designed and produced. The structure of the 'program' creates for a real and deep learning experience that many other DVDs fail to achieve. If you seek a practical and effective way to improve your health and well-being this DVD is a great investment and your time will be well spent in following Stephen's guidance and expertise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner Tai Chi 2 Jun 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have found this a superb DVD for starting Tai Chi. It has been produced at the right speed to allow a beginner to understand exactly how the moves are made. It has given me confidence to move on, although I use this disc several times per week as a very easy, relaxing way to begin the day. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to begin Tai Chi - just remember it is very simple but very clear and do-able.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, clear, simple and helpful 21 Feb 2010

Wanting to start practising TaiChi after nearly 10 years away from it I have found Stephen Luff's "Beginner Tai Chi" DVD the perfect re introduction to it.
Everything, from the Introduction, through the different movements, is explained calmly, simply and with great encouragement.
Although I am now able to do some of the movements without the DVD I find it extremely helpful to practise each day working WITH the DVD and find myself looking forward to it each day.
If you are, like myself, 'over a certain age', please be encouraged that anyone can benefit from gentle calm movements which are so helpful healthwise and which you can perfom at your own pace. Stephen's intructions do not put any pressure to go too quickly. I really cannot speak highly enough of this DVD and am so glad I found it. What's more it's very affordable too!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful for ME/CFS 5 Mar 2010
By Lynn G
Format:DVD
I have had M.E. for more than 5 years, and though I have made some recovery with various nutritional and medical interventions I still experience fatigue, brain fog, headaches, poor concentraion etc - all the usual M.E. symptoms.
I have found this Tai Chi video very useful. It is extremely easy to follow, and gentle enough that even on one of my bad days I can join in with a little bit of the routine. Also it is very relaxing and helpful when my brain is overtired - a symptom that many M.E. sufferers will recognise. I look forward to Stephen releasing more DVD material.
