From the Publisher

Would you like to take up modelling in clay, or sculpture in solid materials? Perhaps your burning desire is to make a portrait head of your child or loved one but you don't really know where to start? Maybe you are concerned that your ambition might prove difficult or expensive?

Ronald Unger dispels all these worries and carries you right through from the beginning to the end. Basic principles, materials, tools, rules, anatomy, design, figurative work and 'abstracts' are all considered. Individuality is encouraged and each step is carefully and fully explained. So this is definitely not a 'do it by numbers' book.

Begin Sculpture is not only a comprehensive text for the first-year student, it is entirely suitable for the beginner in practical classes or working at home, and for everyone who simply wants to create successful, original work and take part in this pleasurable and exciting pastime.

Format:Paperback
An old fashioned book with a lot of writing and few small black and white photos.
Good explanation for different tools. Sculpture base only on clay.
Starts with simple examples to more complicated ones.
A full explanation on head mesurements and detail on each part of the face and ears.
Good if you have a lot of time and a corner where to work in peace and tranquility.

This is an excellent book, practical, informative, pleasant to read and full of enthusiasm. It focusses on clay modelling and plaster carving and does not include carving in stone. Right Way books are an invaluable cost effective publisher, and the book has a quality style & appearance.

Begin Sculpture 19 Aug 2003
Format:Paperback
I found this book very informative for the novice sculptor.
The step by step guide offered by the author allows you to gradually aquire skills in basic sculpting techniques.
The series of set tasks mainly of modelling in clay and then making a variety of moulds before casting in plaster, allows the reader to assimilate many of the disciplines required to achieve success.
The only slight critism are that some of the illustrations are small and difficult to examine for anatomical detail.
