I have just bought this book for my eight year old. My son is good with words with a reading age of 11, but the book is not written in a style to help a young child. Long words and over-complicated word order cloud the chess, which is in itself very good. I will continue looking for a better book for children.

Format: Paperback
I picked up this book having already learnt the basic rules of chess, but with very little game experience or tactical knowledge. The book teaches the very basic principles of tactics and strategy in an easy to understand manner, and I would recommend it for beginners or those who already know the rules but little more. An earlier reviewer mentioned that it was unsuitable for children; I would probably have understood it by the age of 7 or 8, but I understand the modern child isn't so good with longer sentences and formal language, so perhaps it would be best for an adult to guide the child through this, or use another, more simply written book.
