Review

'This was a convincing story with a host of well-drawn characters, from all levels of society. It was difficult to put down.' (HISTORICAL NOVELS REVIEW )

'In Beggars & Choosers, Catrin Collier shows us that she knows the streets of Pontyprydd and the Rhonda like no one else. The concrete reality of the streets, shops and houses sits easily on the pages of this meticulously-researched novel, warming the hearts I am sure of the millions of readers in the Welsh diaspora... the luscious, sensual detail of the Collier novel and also the highly personal attachment to its region that characterises Beggars and Choosers.' (MSLEXIA )

'Another typically enjoyable novel from the pen of Wales' answer to Catherine Cookson.***' (BOOKCASE )

Catrin Collier, the author of numerous popular and critically acclaimed novels has brought us yet another winner! (SOUTH WALES ECHO )

'Catrin Collier brings this era and people to life. She makes it possible to imagine the living conditions of the people at that time and the class divide between the wealthy and the poor.' (SOUTH WALES ARGUS )

'Beggars & Choosers is quite graphic in parts, but that fits in with the gritty reality of the age. I enjoyed the book as a whole.' (GWENT GAZETTE )

SOUTH WALES ECHO

Catrin Collier, the author of numerous popular and critically acclaimed novels has brought us yet another winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inveterate Reader, 9 Mar 2009
By
This review is from: Beggars and Choosers (Hardcover)
This is the first in a complete series of six books by Catrin Collier - and they are ALL brilliant! The series follows the life of an originally 'well-to-do' Welsh Mine Owners family, main female character is Salli Jones. She writes in a similar style to the great Catherine Cookson, so if you liked her books, you will certainly like these.

The follow on books are: Winners & Losers, Sinners & Shadows, Finders & Keepers, Tiger Bay Blues and Tiger Ragtime. They can all be read independently, but it is SO interesting to be able to follow the adventures and high's and low's of the growing family from book to book. I feel sure future readers will enjoy them as much as I certainly did!

I feel I HAVE to list the whole series, as I myself read the first one out of context, but enjoyed it so much I looked to see what else Ms Collier had written, but it was difficult to tell the order of writing, so hope this review makes things easier for future readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An author with heart and soul, 14 Mar 2004

Mrs booth (SOUTH OF ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Beggars & Choosers (Paperback)
I have read all of catrin collier's books, and beggars and choosers continues to put heart and soul into this story. It is the kind of story that pulls the reader right into the pages, and actually feel as if your there right along side of the characters. I have cried and laughed and felt every mixed emotion with the story lines.
I had the pleasure of meeting Catrin Collier in Pontypridd when i lived there, and she has signed lots of my books, i was overwhelmed at meeting such a lovely lady, continue the excellent work Catrin, i'm a true fan. I look forward to your next publication.

Yours truly
Mrs lorraine booth - gosport hampshire.

This review is from: Beggars & Choosers (Paperback)
Well she's done it again.Catrin Collier has come up trumps with her new book "Beggars and Choosers".
The story revolves around a young woman called Sali who through a series of events finds herself at the mercy of a vile man well beneath her supposed station in life. The story follows Sali as she battles her way through fear and oppresion to find a place where she can feel safe with a man who will love her the way she deserves to be loved.
