Book Description

14 May 2009
Silly Beggar is a collection of very funny letters sent as emails to large companies with the sole intent of acquiring a freebie. Rejoice as the customer service departments of multinational corporations are fed ridculous stories to make them part with T-shirts or other logo-bearing bounty. Bask in the author's bizarre accounts and fishy tales, each designed to garner goodies for absolutely nothing. Whether he's playing the system or just playing games, James Spence demonstrates his comic genius via his uniquely entertaining letters. The respondents often surprise us too by entering into the spirit of the 'game'. With colour photos of the author and his collection of branded freebies which now take up the spare room in his flat! Read this book and you too can get something for absolutely nothing.

Review

The author has clearly spent years plaguing companies with his idiotic requests for freebies, could this be where the global meltdown started? ----Paul Foot, comedian, The Guild of Paul Foot Connoisseurs

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Book of the Year 1 May 2009
Format:Paperback
BEAT THE CREDIT CRUNCH AND LAUGH!

This book takes the art of acquiring the freebie to a whole new level of absurdity.

Discover the art of the entertaining email each craftily designed to garner goodies for absolutely nothing.

Delight in the fun of strange experiments, attacks by penguins and all manner of fishy tales, dreamt up by a zany man on the make.

Enjoy the weird and wonderful replies and marvel at the goodies that arrive through the post!

Whether he's playing the system or just playing games, James Spence demonstrates his comic genius via this uniquely entertaining book.

This is honestly one of the funniest books I have ever read! It's amazing the different stuff this guy got sent. It goes to show that if you don't ask, you don't get.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing in places, but very samey 31 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having read the classic 'Henry Root Letters' I wanted more, so I bought this book and Robin Cooper's 'The Timewaster Letters' - the latter being much funnier.

The basic premise of this book is about the author trying to blag a free T-shirt from various companies and organizations. He tries more and more bizarre, and occasionally funny methods to persuade the companies to send him free stuff. I found their replies just as funny as his requests, even the seriously worded ones!

This is quite a thin book, I read it in a couple of hours. It's the kind of book to have in your loo for a brief chuckle whilst 'otherwise engaged'.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Credit Crunch: A Survival Guide 16 May 2009
Format:Paperback
If ever a situation was to arise when an author was to be called upon to demonstrate clairvoyance then we should look no further than James Spence.
Five years ago when we were being offered money by banks as if it were going out of fashion James shunned these appraoches and embarked on a frugle scheme which has seen only himself and Sir Fred Goodwin benefiting from these troubled times.

His plan was so simple that even a chimp with a crayon could not fail with it. Armed only with a computer, a catalogue of local, national and international companies and an arsenal of characters he went about requesting t-shirts by recounting tales of adventure/ misadventure. This plan was so successful that it appears that Messr. Spence quickly took anything that any company would offer him to his financial gain.

I came across this book by reading about it in a Scottish national newspaper and then by chance I heard the author on the radio. I took this as a sign to buy and buy I did.

Although some techniques and stories he used to aquire merchandise will not appeal to everyones sense of humour so varied is his approach I doubt that there is not a single person who will not find this volume hilarious.
His enquires to the British Board of Film Classification and to the British Dental Association are of particular note.

If you were to copy the authors lead then you may never again have to spend your hard earned money on presents for Birthdays, Christmas or any other secular or religious occasion. The only down side is that if you do then the Credit Crunch may last another 10 years!
