Review

Victoria Moran, bestselling author of Main Street Vegan and Creating a Charmed Life"Rory Freedman speaks Dog-and Cat and Cow and Guinea Pig. In Beg, she translates the barks, the moos, and the looks in those innocent eyes so we get the message: These beings matter more than we ever dreamed, first to their autonomous selves, but also to our very humanity. And she does this in writing so crisp, honest, and engaging that you won't put this book down-at least not until it's time to walk the dog." Alexandra Paul, actress"Beg has all the wit and no-pulled punches style of Skinny Bitch, and Rory Freedman's intensely personal revelations will tug at your heart at the same time that you are chuckling at her candor. It is at once a memoir, a how-to manual, a self-help book, an animal rights treatise and an intimate letter from your best friend. After reading this wonderful book, not only have I changed the way I treat my cat, I have also changed the way I look at the world. I BEG you to buy this book-you'll be glad you did."Lisa Bloom, New York Times bestselling author of Think and Swagger"Ready to make love an action verb? Beg is your essential handbook." Simone Reyes, cast member of Running Russell Simmons and animal rights activist "Rory Freedman heard the call of billions of suffering animals and was brave enough to answer it in print, in the media and in your face. She is an integral part of our fight for total animal liberation and has provided us with the gift of this new book which is sure to recruit more warriors of compassion to our cause." Kathy Freston, NY Times bestselling author of The Lean, Veganist, and Quantum WellnessIf there were a rock star advocate for animals, Rory Freedman would be it...I love that Skinny Bitch! John Joseph , Cro-Mags "I can honestly say that Rory has done more than any other person I know to promote the cause of compassion for animals. Her energy and determination is unending and unapologetic, and it needs to be. Beg is a vital piece of literature for this growing movement in that it makes us take a look at the industries profiting off of the cruel mistreatment of animals and end it so we can live harmoniously on Planet Earth with all beings. Bravo my Sister! Dr. Jenn Berman, host of VH1 Couples Therapy "Beg is an important book to read for anyone who cares about animals. Rory manages to educate, inspire and entertain all at once. I BEG you to read it." Russell Simmons"Thanks to Rory Freedman people who love animals but don't know how to help them now have an all-inclusive guide to being their savior " John Robbins, bestselling author of Diet For a New America, The Food Revolution, and Co-founder of The Food Revolution Network"If you love your dog or cat, if you love animals, this book is a must. You will be talking about it for years, because it will change your life and make you a better person." Ingrid Newkirk, cofounder and president PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) "Funny and Frank. Ms. Freedman doesn't pussyfoot: she lays it on the line with her unembarrassed love for the dogs in her own life and a perfect plan as to how every dogophile can shake a leg to help dogs and other living beings who aren't as lucky." Sharon Gannon, cofounder of Jivamukti Yoga "Beg begs to be listened to. Rory's voice is informed, passionate, smart, humorous, non-judgmental, but perhaps most importantly her voice is our own collective voice-longing to be kind in an unkind world. This book will show you how to be an irresistibly happy person whose own life has the power to uplift the whole world." Nathan Runkle, executive director Mercy for Animals"Rory Freedman's Beg is a call to arms for anyone who considers themselves an animal lover. In this seamless follow-up to her Skinny Bitch series, Freedman highlights a world that is rarely seen. Your eyes will be opened, but more importantly, so will your heart." Emily Deschanel, actress and activist"Funny and heartwarming, but also revealing, Beg is a must-read for every animal lover. You'll laugh, you'll learn, and you'll be a better animal lover." Tatiana von Furstenburg, filmmaker"I read it in a couple of hours and am extremely motivated to increase my mindfulness and action towards my respect for life and my love of animals. The book is filled with research, information and finely-combed facts. So much detail, and yet, delivered in an easy, conversational style that has levity and transmits the enthusiasm of the author. The message is contagious-an amazing example of advocacy. I look forward to being able to buy the book and spread the message by giving copies to friends." Ben Lee, award winning singer/songwriter, actor"Beg is an important book. It opened my heart to realities that were quite painful, but important for me to face and understand. It asks us to step up in awareness and begin making more conscious choices in our daily lives. Thank you Rory for the wakeup call." Ione Skye, actress, painter, and director"Beg makes the process of changing our relationship to animals feel easy and inspired rather than burdensome. Something about Rory and the way she has written this book makes a difficult subject matter digestible to everyone." Gene Baur, president and co-founder Farm Sanctuary"In Beg, like in Skinny Bitch, Rory Freedman explains directly and succinctly about how each of us can make simple choices to create a better world. Kindness to animals is good for animals, and it's also good for us. Highly recommended." Nellie McKay, award-winning singer/songwriter and actress"Rory Freedman is on a mission not just to change our lives or the lives of our companions but to make the world a better place for all its inhabitants." Booklist "A read that is both spry and absorbing ...a highly motivating call to action."

This book provides a very informative approach to understanding animals and animal welfare. Whilst there are some points I disagree with, including dog training, I believe this book is essential for anyone who loves animals and is thinking of turning vegeterian or vegan as it will certianly make you think differently about eating meat or dairy! Rory covers a range of topics and exposes a lot about animal industries, from argriculture to animals in showbusiness, showing how animals suffer. We all think free range or films which state 'no animals were hurt during filming', are a good thing and that the animals have been looked after, but this book exposes the tells a different story, including how free range can just mean leaving a door open in a cramped barn.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in animal rights. It kind of makes you ashamed to be human once you've finished but it will fill you with fire and make you want to tell everyone you know about the atrocities we human inflict on animals, and to become part of the fight to change things for the better. Lots of info in there that I didn't know such as how animals are treated on film sets for example. Recommended read.

Powerful, graphic 10 May 2013
By Sylvia - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book really needs to come with a warning label. Its graphic descriptions of everyday animal cruelty literally made me physically ill. This book is not for the faint of heart. But, the author's purpose is clear--she asks "can you know what is happening every day to the animals we use for our own purposes and NOT change?" The cover is actually misleading--this is not a book about man's best friend. It is a no holds barred description of animal cruelty. I would challenge people to read this book without discarding it when the going gets tough. As the title says, it presents a radical new way of regarding animals, and is an essential read if you are to be properly informed about how we unwittingly contribute to the suffering of animals..

Fantastic Open your Heart Book for All Animals! 3 May 2013
By Linda Middlesworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
BEG hit the nail on the head! Wish I had known this information years ago...I, sadly, was one of those people who had so much stress going on, that I surrendered our dog 30 years ago!!! Wish I could have been aware of the humane thing to do! Even though this book reminds me that I made some huge mistake in the past, I now try to live my life to help all animals and I know that Rory does that and is doing that with this perspective. I hope her book will stop others from doing what I did. Even if you do not understand the entire, empathetic connection we have to all animals, this book just may get you there. I love Rory for her truth, for her honesty, for her kindness and compassion! Rory is one of the most influential authors of our time. She is changing people all over the world to think about how we need to be inclusive with all beings, not just human beings. All beings want protection from harm and need love just like all of us! Thank you Rory for another way to educate and touch hearts! This is a must read for all humans!

thank you 18 May 2013

On behalf of every dog (or cat) in the world THANK YOU for this book!!!

I didn't really know what I was getting when I asked to review this book but from page 1 I was not disappointed (it is also the first book I have read on this subject). The author's sense of humour combined with her own personal experiences makes this book a must read for anyone considering adopting a pet for the first time or the tenth.

This is such an important book - from pointing out why adoption from rescues should be the preferred method of pet adoption to explaining the differences between buying from a breeder or pet store - it makes you think and rethink previous pet adoptions and future adoptions. Hopefully along with that rethinking, it does the job by convincing pet owners to be more responsible towards our four legged bundles of love instead of considering them as disposable as last year's furniture.

Over the past few years, I have become what I never expected to be - a doggy mom, lover and advocate (I am owned by two dogs that were rescued by me before they got dumped at shelters). I have become disgusted watching friends and family BUY when there are rescues flying in dogs from up north (I live in Manitoba) that are subjected to yearly stray dog culls. This is a way of life and the people up don't even blink when it happens. Yet it is 100 percent preventable!

The second half of this book focused on the rest of the animal kingdom. It is a call to arms against zoos, circuses, factory farms, fishing, hunting, trapping, bull fighting, dog races, horse races, carriage rides, animals in movies - basically any practice that animals can suffer, be injured or killed. A self-professed vegan, the author encourages people to realize that "suffering is suffering" and the way we treat animals (including those we eat) is deplorable.

While I am on the fence regarding going vegan (I was raised on a small dairy and hobby farm and we did none of the things described in the book), I have a daughter who adopted the vegan lifestyle about five years ago. Reading this portion helped educate me on her viewpoint. While I am not sure I would swear off meat (which I rarely eat anyways) it makes me more inclined to raise a few chickens in my garage to ensure that my eggs are gathered in a humane way.

This book needs to be read by anyone who claims to be an animal lover; especially by newbie pet owners. As the title implies, there are animals who "Beg" just to be loved, appreciated and to have a life - we owe the fur-balls that commitment. We created this madness of the pedigree animal and millions of animals suffer because they don't fit in that category. Animals are powerless - we are not.

Beg is an educational manual that should be placed in the hands of every single person who claims that they love animals; it will make you think twice the next time you buy a pet, go clothes shopping or pick up the weekly groceries.

Beg: A Radical New Way of Regarding Animals 8 Jun. 2013
By Barbara Kesler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
In this book, Rory Freedman gives us a very real and comprehensive education on the exploitation of animals by humans. But she's not just a Debbie Downer. She lays out specific actions we can all take that are very practical, and will make a huge difference. I found this book to be very inspiring, motivating, and encouraging. Rory also provides lots of great information on taking care of our own companion animals (even for us experienced dog mom's!). Rory really covers everything in this book. I would highly recommend it to those new to helping animals, and also to us more seasoned animal activists as well.
