Product Description

Product Description

It's the mystery of mysteries-what's going on inside a pregnant woman's belly? That's what Jennifer Davis's older children wanted to know while she was expecting the younger. So to explain, she wrote BEFORE YOU WERE BORN, now with 102,000 copies in print, a joyful lift-the-flap book that tells the parallel story of mother and baby during the nine months of pregnancy.

Illustrated with full-color whimsy by Laura Cornell, whose delightful work is familiar to readers of Jamie Lee Curtis's Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born and When I Was Little, BEFORE YOU WERE BORN is a month-by-month countdown written in rhyming verse.

Each page shows what's happening to the mother on the outside and then, under the flap, in the mother's belly to the baby on the inside. Children learn how Mommy is feeling and how the baby is developing, about hiccups, kicks, and umbilical cords, a first heartbeat, and the contractions that mark the beginning of labor.

For expectant mothers and curious little kids, and especially for kids with siblings on the way, it is an interactive storybook that delivers delight and information and reassurance, too.

not what I expected 29 Jun 2004
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Actually, I thought it was a bit rubbish.... My daughter is 2 1/2, and I'm now expecting no.2, so this seemed like a great book to help explain what is happening inside me. She loves stories and enjoys asking questions about what we read, so it should have been a great discussion point.

I think the front cover is great, and that is what drew me towards the book, but all the illustrations inside are complex, cartoon-like and accompanied by irritating little rhymes that don't always make much sense. I obviously wasn't expecting a medical textbook, but more simplistic drawings that actually bear some resemblence to what's going on inside would have been helpful!

My daughter was equally unimpressed and has not asked for this book again, unlike 'hello baby' and 'runa's birth' which are her current favourites.

The upshot is that it is a brilliant concept, poorly realised. Any publishers out there want to have a go at an alternative???

The description was of a lift-the-flap book explaining what happens when mummy's pregnant. I bought this hoping it would be helpful for my 3-a-half-year-old, as I'm pregnant with our second child. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a silly poem with rhymes like "For about nine months we became chummy, While you developed inside my tummy." It doesn't describe my experience of pregnancy/labour, but is written in the first person: "I had my first contraction. Dad was nervous, he flew into action." That is completely unhelpful to my son as it doesn't tell him anything about what happened when I was pregnant with him, nor does it explain in clear language what will be happening this time - for example, the word contraction is meaningless to him. Real rubbish. I really regret buying this.

Excellent Book 7 Jan 2004
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book for my 3 1/2 year old daughter - and it's excellent. It's very subtle - doesn't go into any detail about how baby got there (thank god!). She loves it - and so do I.
