A gripping multi-generational family drama set in London and Cornwall, from 1908 until the 1950s. On an autumn day in 1909 wealthy young Richard Finborough catches sight of twenty-year-old Isabel Zeale at the harbour at Lynmouth in Devon. Her beauty captivates him. Aware of shameful secrets in her past, Isabel has no intention of letting anyone into her life, but Richard's persistence and ardour eventually win him her trust and her hand in marriage. The decades pass and Isabel and Richard raise a family through the turbulent times of the First World War and the 1920s. As her children reach adulthood, Isabel is convinced her secret is safe - until an old acquaintance emerges from the shadows, turning her world upside down. To protect the happiness of those she loves most, Isabel must find the courage to confront what came before, and live with the consequences...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant historical fiction... 13 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Just finished this new book from Judith Lennox and she has hit the spot again. 'Before The Storm' is darker than her previous couple of titles, set in the first half of the 20th century, amongst two world wars. Great story, with characters you really want to follow till the end. What I love about this book is the way Lennox shows how these huge world events affect ordinary people and their lives. There is also a hint of a mystery to this book... but I won't spoil it for you! A great summer read.

5.0 out of 5 stars before the storm 4 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
i read this excellent book about a year ago and was so impressed by the atmosphere created surrounding the first half of last century.
Having been born in 1932 it seemed to be particularly apt.

Iwas to be pleasantly surprised that it was the monthly choice in my U3A book group and i am now half way through it again.

I very rarely read a book twice but this is proving to be an unexpected pleasure.

I think that I shall be hooked on Judith Lennox from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable ! 14 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Judith Lennox doesn't just write a story, she takes you there. You become a fascinated observer into the lives of her characters, each one so incredibly real that, love them or loath them, you care about each one of them, and long after you have finished the last page, you still go on wondering what happened next . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars a book of many qualities 6 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a very well written novel set in a well-researched, well-documented historical background. I liked the portraying of the various characters, their credibility and endearing quality for some. It is the perfect relaxing yet informative read I have come across lately. Most enjoyable, truly unputdownable.

5.0 out of 5 stars before the storm 30 July 2008
Format:Paperback
As usual, Judith Lennox has written another brilliant book. I can hardly wait for the next book. The story grips you from the first page and I find it so hard to put down. But, then you really don't want it to end because it is so good. I have read everyone of Judith's books and each one is better than the last. The characters are so well developed and we come to know each so well.

4.0 out of 5 stars An easy summer read 10 Aug 2010
By Rachel
Format:Paperback
The best way I can describe this book is as a good summer read. Although the 600+ pages might seem daunting, this is an easy book to read and I plowed through it in three days. A great historical blockbuster that spans two generations of a family from the turn of the twentieth century until the end of WWII, this is perfect is you like romance, family sagas or historical settings. I'll admit that Lennox didn't exactly delve deep into the emotions of the characters - difficult with such a large cast - and I didn't always feel terribly connected to them, but she's fantastic at capturing the setting and the period. There was so much drama going on in this book, which made it difficult to put down, but I felt that it was quite sad in places. No one seemed to get what they wanted until near the end of the novel and there were so many broken and dysfunctional relationships - which I suppose is realistic for such families where marriages are made for social and financial reasons rather than love. All in all, a compelling, light summer read although nothing new or original.

3.0 out of 5 stars easy read
This is a book for beaches or long air flights. I'm afarid I could not relate to any of the characters and found the style very simplistic - not really a book for me, sorry.

I thought this book was poor. A rambling story of a dysfunctional family. The story line was thin and when it got thinner the author invented a new character. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Before the storm
A story full of intrigue and mystery but touchingly romantic. It highlights peoples' failings, desires and fears all in one novel. A good read which I found hard to put down.
