-Joseph Kanon, author of Los Alamos

"Preston's revelatory history is rich in telling moments, powerful personalities, intense confrontations, and indelible images of the devastation delivered by nuclear weapons."
-Booklist

"What Preston does better than any other writer is to capture the human aspects of the frankly exciting race to create a nuclear weapon . . ."
-Chicago Sun-Times

Immensely readable and a fantastic account of the rapid development of this science and the horrors of the second world war.

Fascinating Book 26 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was once loaned a copy of this book, and finally purchased my own copy.

It is a fascinating history of the atomic age, and worth reading carefully several times, as new things seem to come to light each time you read it.
It was so sad that Marie and Pierre Curie were, initially, so completely unaware of the dangerous nature of the new elements they were playing with, but then how could they know; they had only just discovered them. Before the Fall-out: From Marie Curie to Hiroshima

great book 26 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
well worth the read - not the same level of detail as 'Making of the Atomic Bomb' (which is my favourite book of all time), but is easier to read.
