Amazon.co.uk Review

In 1994, director Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused, Waking Life) made Before Sunrise, a gorgeous poem of a movie about two strangers (played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) wandering around Vienna, talking, and falling in love. Ten years later, Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have returned with Before Sunset, which reunites the same characters after Hawke has written a book about that night. Delpy appears at the final book reading of his European tour; they have less than two hours before Hawke has to catch a flight to New York...and in that time, they walk around Paris, talk, and fall in love all over again. It sounds simple, perhaps dull, but it's written with such skill and care and acted with such richness that it's a miracle of filmmaking. On its own, Before Sunset is moving and wonderful; seen right after Before Sunrise, it will break your heart. --Bret Fetzer

Synopsis

Nine years ago, director Richard Linklater's BEFORE SUNRISE introduced American twentysomething Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and French twentysomething Celine (Julie Delpy). The two met on a train to Vienna, and spent the night together wandering around the city, talking, and falling for each other. They parted ways, vowing to meet in Vienna in six months. Linklater's latest film, BEFORE SUNSET, picks up where the 1994 film left off. In Paris promoting a novel he has written about their one perfect night together (the two were never reunited), Jesse is dumbfounded when Celine shows up at his last bookstore interview. With just a few hours remaining before his flight back to the States, Jesse and Celine meander through Paris, returning in no time at all to their playful banter, flirtation, and intense conversations about life, love, and the state of the world. Although the sexual tension is palpable, Jesse is married--albeit unhappily--and has a young son, and Celine has a boyfriend. Are these thirtysomethings really soul mates, or ships destined to keep passing in the night?

5.0 out of 5 stars This made me cry!!, 28 Aug 2005

(REAL NAME)
This is a incredible film. The dialogue between the (only)two charecters, and how they relate to each other is entirely beleivable and entirely fabulous. The ending is appropriate, but gives the tantalising possibility of a further follow on. If I gave details of the plot it might sound crass, but this film is an absolutely must see!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing complicated, just pure genious!, 1 Feb 2005
Having bought 'before sunrise' last year I was very pleased, if not a little apprehensive to hear about a sequel. Ten years is a long time to wait,, and you might think the characters, and actors, will be too different and distant now. However if you were to watch the two films together you would feel everything is in preportion with the timeline of the story!
Theres nothing hi-tech, dangerous or mysterious; and theres no action packed stunts, but still I enjoyed this film more than most "big budget blockbusters" i've seen recently. This film is honest and heartwarming with superb perfomances comming from bothlead roles!
I dare anyone to watch this film without loving every second and comming out at the other end with a new found respect for movie making!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare modern film - deep, natural, romantic and charming, 18 Sep 2005
By VEG (UK) - See all my reviews
Before Sunset is a sequel, and I think it would be sheer folly to watch it without first watching Before Sunrise. Both films rely upon an extremely natural acting on the part of Hawke (Jesse) and Deply (Celine); who really provide the sole focus in both films. Moreover, both films rely upon in-depth conversations about all manner of topics as Jesse and Celine probe each other. Some people might find these conversations boring, and the scenes over-long. Me, I found them thoroughly absorbing, and a necessary part of getting to know the characters. And you do get to know them as 3-D people; their strengths, failings, neuroses, loves and hates. Moreover, I found the screen-play very clever. A good part of the film involves Jesse and Celine skirting round each other, and we are well into the film before they feel able to ask the questions they really want to ask. The first film was more atmospheric, I agree, with the director using the streets of Prague to great effect, and relying upon the facial expressions of the actors to tell 1000 words. But in Before Sunset, the actors only have a few hours - until Jesse has to catch is plane home to NY - to catch up on the 9 years they've been apart. Surely they'd have a lot to talk about?

I loved the direction too - the simple but effective scenes walking the streets of Paris.

Remember the end of Before Sunrise, where there is about five minutes showing the viewers all the places Jesse and Celine had been, the streets, parks, etc? I found this really quite moving, as these places clearly held some significance to Jesse & Celine, and do to the viewers, but this significance is lost when they've left. The wine bottle and glasses in the park are just that... The beginning of Before Sunset - and this is clever - shows us the places that Jesse and Celine will be in the film that follows...

NB: Please don't forget to watch "the making of" section on the disc. This really helps you understand why they made the film and how they made it.
