Book Description

12 Jun 2001
This is the story of two very different women traveling in the American West in 1847. Emily Lamb is an idealistic young woman who is driven from her home by a mob, and becomes the sole survivor of her family. Sariah Porter grew up on the frontier, and is the granddaughter of an Indian Medicine man. As they travel along the Mormon Trail, they grow in friendship--innocent of the terrible danger shadowing them. They travel through Indian Country, across the plains, and over the Rocky Mountains. Along the way, they meet a variety of characters, some good, some less than honest, and all very human. When they near the end of the trail, Emily must choose between becomming the second wife in a polygamous marriage, or a spinster on the trail with Sariah.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hopefully,never again. 3 April 2002
Being an avid reader with special interest in pioneers'history I was really dismayed by the poor
quality of the writing. The plot and setting had great potential but issues were not tackled in any depth and the book turned out to be rather superficial leaving the reader with a lot of question marks especially about the'romantic friendship'and the Mormons' way of life.A lost opportunity to write an excellent book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Female Romantic Friendship in the Old West 21 Feb 2002
By Lucille O'Campbell - Published on Amazon.com
This book, which deals with the old west and the immigration of the Mormons to Utah, is a spiritual combination of Mormonism and Native American beliefs.

It centers around two young women, who are rather alone in the world; Emily Lamb who is Caucasian, and Sariah Porter who is of mixed race, Caucasian and Native American.

While the book ended in a way that somewhat pleased me, I was extremely disappointed that although the two women kiss and embrace throughout the book, the author makes it quite clear the relationship is never consummated.

The author seems to be of the opinion that "romantic friendships" also known as "Boston Marriages", which were acceptable in the Mid-Nineteeth Century were always "sexless unions" between persons of the same gender. I tend to disagree. While some of them may have been, I think what went on behind closed doors was not generally admitted, but that it definitely occurred.

5.0 out of 5 stars All things meet in the middle. 14 Sep 2001
By "chakram3" - Published on Amazon.com
It is difficult to write an effective story that offers the reader entertainment as well as an opportunity to learn something. Linde Knighton has accomplished this with style in her historical short-novel of Emily and Sariah on their quest across a brave new land. Ms.Knighton has skillfully woven action, romance and mystery into highly satisfying pieces of Native American and Mormon cultures.
If this is a sign of what is yet to come from this author, we are in for a rare treat indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Before Our Journey's Through 28 Aug 2001
By Richard A. Hoaglund - Published on Amazon.com
Lindë Knighton brings alive the Old American West during the Mormon Diaspora. Her historical framework is detailed and vivid. Her characters are three-dimensional and she makes the reader care about what happens to them, heroes and villains alike. Plotting is brisk. Emily and Sariah are a dynamic pair who keep the reader's sympathy and attention. This reviewer hopes for at least a sequel.
