Amazon.co.uk Review

Mary Higgins Clark's 22nd romantic thriller is destined for bestsellerdom on the strength of her reputation alone. Which is not to say that Before I Say Good-Bye doesn't have a bit of all the ingredients of the Clark genre: a little mystery, a likeable heroine and even a nice guy who turns up midway through the novel and promises her romance and a second chance at happiness. But while the set-up is promising and the bare essentials of a compelling read are all here, only readers who are already Higgins fans will be kept completely spellbound.

Nell MacDermott is the politically ambitious granddaughter of a canny politician in Manhattan's silk stocking district, and her grandfather wants her to run for his old congressional seat. But there are rumours that Adam Cauliff, Nell's husband, has been involved in a real estate and construction scam, and until Nell gets to the bottom of this her political future will be clouded. When Adam and his assistant are killed in an explosion aboard his boat, Nell is determined to clear his name. Nudged into action by her nascent psychic powers and a medium who may be her only link to Adam, Nell learns more about her husband's mysterious past than she bargained for and--naturally--stumbles onto a conspiracy that puts her own life in danger. The narrative seems more like an outline for a novel than a novel itself; the characters are sketched rather than fully explored--particularly Nell, whose back story doesn't provide enough information to make her actions understandable. But the pacing is expert and Clark's dedicated fans will doubtless forgive her for not making this her strongest outing.

Product Description

Nell McDermot is devastated when her husband's cabin cruiser blows up. Not only is she shattered by Adam's sudden death, but she is wracked with guilt, because the last time Nell saw Adam alive, she told him to leave and never come back. Nell's feelings are further complicated by her Great-aunt Gert's insistence that she try to make peace with Adam through a medium. And despite her scepticism, the awful burden of guilt finally drives Nell to consult Bonnie Wilson, a well-known psychic. As Nell searches for the truth about Adam's death, she relies more and more heavily on Bonnie, who claims to be receiving instructions from Adam. But what Nell does not know is that she is being closely watched, and the nearer she comes to learning what happened to her husband, the nearer she is to becoming the next victim of a ruthless killer...

Format:Hardcover
Mary Higgins Clark writes an intriguing tale that combines elements of a thriller with that of an amateur sleuth mystery. The story line is fun and exciting, especially when Nell begins her inquiries. Nell is a wonderful character and her grandfather comes across as a powerful individual. The support cast is developed to the point where the reader understands their flaws. Ms. Clark provides her myriad of fans with another enthralling tale filled with action and adventure exciting tale.

Sorry Mary and all of your fans (of which I am wholeheartedly one) but this was not up to your usual gripping standards. It is a fairly dull and lifeless plot that I didn't find too hard to put down.18 outstanding and brilliantly written stories that kept me coming back for more and then this arrives. About time I thought.Unfortunatley not worth the wait.Sorry but this was not to the "Queen of suspense's" usual excellent standard that we all know and love.

And there was also talk of her running for Congress...
You can generally depend on Mary Higgins Clark to provide a good element of suspense and mystery and, although I'm a sceptic, I went along with the small measure of spiritualism... Read more

Torn between a 2 or 3 rating
I am torn between giving this a 2 or 3 star rating. The start of the book was fine, fairly decent pace to getting the story started and building a bit of background. Read more

Fast Read, but loose plot
The further you get into the book the better it flows. You have trouble at first figuring out what she is trying to say in this book. She seems to go off on many tangents. Read more
