Unfortunately I had to read this for my crime book group, so felt that I had to read it to the bitter end.
The story begins with Lina a young spinster who falls in love with the ne'er do well Johnnie. She has been warned against him, but love is blind!
The story lurches through crimes that Johnnie commits including lies, swindles, theft and of course eventually murder.
Lina is the most infuriating women who dithers from one disaster to the next, until you feel that you would like to give her a good shake (or worse).
As a reader you can see every calamity pages before it happens, there are no surprises except to Lina, whose naivety is boundless.
I know that the book was written in the 1930s and crime writing has changed but this was laughable and unbelievable.
